Well this post has been a long time in the making - some might say it’s been exhausting! Our current 1948/early 1949 exhaust systems were deemed good enough by JLR to use on the Reborn program early cars but ultimately these were a compromise between what tooling was available at the time and what the exhaust manufacturer could actually produce. Fast forward to late 2025 into 2026 and after a lot of research and time experimenting with different pipe bends (the original systems had a 6inch radius bend) as well as trying to identify exactly how the exhaust brackets were designed - to even looking at wear marks on my original 1948 chassis to determine the location of said brackets. I’ve worked very closely with and the following is what we’ve come up with. The system uses a 7inch diameter silencer (original factory spec), 6inch radius bends (again original factory spec) and I think it’s about a close as can be achieved without someone turning up a holy grail of a complete, factory original 1948 exhaust system…these will be available on a special order basis only and will of course be coated in a period correct ivory/cream paint finish.

From dry build to final build, the devil is in the detail as they say. This original mid 1949 R866 - prefix car came to us in a complete but very worn out state. It is now undergoing a full, ground up restoration. In the following pictures we’ve tried to show how meticulous we are with these vehicles - from the bodywork through to the engine and drivetrain and much more! What this space for progress pictures as the restoration continues…..

Reflecting on last weekend’s mini adventure with and .smallest.cog

We left early in the morning, it was -7 degrees! Initially, driving conditions were somewhat challenging - we had freezing fog to contend with which made the windscreen frost up on both sides! Necessitating driving with one’s head out of the window and frequent stops to spray de-icer on the screen.
Having enjoyed the two hour drive over to Ross-on-Wye, we then met up with the other cars selected by Hammond to form a convoy to drive around Ross-on-Wye and then we headed off to a farming friend of Richard’s for some off-roading and some sideways action around a field. We concluded with a short drive to .smallest.cog for a tour, a much needed coffee and a bacon roll. Epic day meeting like minded Land Rover enthusiasts and talking all things LR Series 1 with . Thanks to all that made this day happen!

We would like to wish all our customers around the world a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. It’s been a busy 12 months at CKD HQ as we have continued to grow our product range with the support and feedback from our clients - and for this we thank you! I’ve just put together a very quick photo montage of some of the projects we have completed in the last 12 months. Bring on next year as we look forward to more restorations and more new parts coming online.

From Aussie tray-back to standard 109” rear tub spec! The owner of our tray-back patina restoration 109” had long since asked us to keep a lookout for a decent, straight, sun bleached, dove grey rear body for his car and if we found one that met all of the criteria - we were to buy it…..Well fast forward around two years and we finally got one that was good enough. So off came the rear tray and on went the standard 109” rear tub. We returned the rear wiring back to factory spec and even tracked down the correct AUS/NAS rear number plate mounting care of - cheers Ike! A new set of hood sticks and canvas completed the look. The original tailgate was extensively repaired and patina painted to match the rest of the vehicle.

Shown here having successfully completed a 225 mile drive back to Wales without even so much as a hiccup. Thanks to .engines for another wonderful rebuilt engine.

A few shots from our recently completed 1948 model 80” restoration. Details on this car include an original Solex 32PBI carburettor which is date stamped E48. Lucas B12 coil k***s which we have had manufactured for our own builds and even triple X marked windscreen glass - again it is date coded to the vehicle exactly as the originals were.

The humble rear capstan winch….often considered by many to be the rarest of the rare in terms of accessories for a Series Land Rover, they do come up for sale occasionally and we just happened to be in the right place at the right time for once.

So this set us on a path of a full strip and rebuild to check all the internals were still in good working order - and we weren’t disappointed! A new shear pin was supplied by to replace the incorrect and dangerous brass pin that had been fitted in the past. We also had some new shims made to set the preload up correctly on the worm drive gear. All in all a very satisfying little side project, with the result now bolted onto the existing PTO output unit on our 1948 model chassis number R861164.
