**But what is it?**

The wishbone connects the chassis to the steering knuckle and allows for more flexible movement up and down. It’s a vital component to the suspension as well as helping to keep the wheel... On course. Corrosion in structural areas ends in total collapse.

This presents a huge risk - the damaged part chipping and hitting other parts of the suspension or brake mechanism; in this case chipping the brake pads of the vehicle to the point of being useless. Failure also reduces contact between the wheels and the road; producing brake failures, uneven tyre wear and steering issues.

Salt corrosion is increased in North Tyneside due to spray from the North Sea and should always be checked for more regularly in coastal regions.

Danger - Free heated seats!

Do you know the risks associated with external electronics? 

Pictured is the current limiter on a modern Mercedes Sprinter.  This connects directly to the positive terminal of the starter battery and works to prevent major power surges as the engine starts.  The battery is situated right underneath the seats in the cabin.  

Simply thanks to soil, salt and water this one has ended up majorly poorly.  It doesn’t take an expert eye to spot the significant salt corrosion and verdigris as well as blackening around the connection (look closely). 

When the connection to the terminal is forced loose like this; we risk arcing and shorts along with starter issues culminating into an EXTREME fire risk.  On closer inspection you can see the signs of the wiring itself beginning to melt.  

May I remind you that this is situated less than a metre from the driver's seat…

I replaced the entire box along with adjusting the wiring position to reduce future risk.

If I say “this should only take an hour,” just know I believed it when I said it. I was optimistic. I had hope. I had faith in the engineering. Then the first bolt reminded me who’s really in charge.
