After the prep work last week I rode in the Albion FT103N to Truck Fest Classic. At 28 mph and 72 dB it was a quieter but definitely slower trip to Edinburgh!

What a fantastic weekend! The Scottish Military Vehicle Group's end of season run was down here in the south west of Scotland. We visited the memorial to a Czech Spitfire pilot, Frantisek Hekl, whose plane crashed into Loch Doon in October 1941. Then over the forestry tracks and around the highest village in Scotland before heading down to Dumfries. Although, sadly the Dodge was missing and popping like a machine gun and on the way home we travelled 50 miles at a sedate 40mph due to the lack of power....we looked awesome doing it, so it's still a win in my book.

Another problem I encountered on the trip around England was the loss of 1L of differential oil per day. This was due to the front pinion seal rotating in its housing, but also the fact that the pinion sealing faces were beyond appalling. Both pinions were sent away for High Velocity Oxy Fuel spraying (metal spraying) to bring the sealing faces back to their original condition which, in partnership with a new front diff pinion seal from , solved the leaking.
I have no idea what I was thinking when I reinstalled these pinions....

After 5 days of fairly exhausting travel at a top speed of 55mph the head gasket vaporised between cylinders 5 and 6. This happened on the final climb to a campsite north of Halifax when I noticed a change in engine tone and a drop in power. At the campsite it was clear the Dodge was running on 5 cylinders and after some cool down time started smoking, this coupled with very little compression in cylinder 6 resulted in the easy decision to call recovery.
After consulting with members of the Scottish Military Vehicle Group, it has become obvious that the head gasket issue was caused by me, as I hadn't retighten the cylinder head nuts regularly which is a MUST with copper/asbestos head gaskets and vehicles of this age (now I know).
I was very pleased with McAdams Rescue and Recovery who kept me updated with pictorial updates as they went up the road and stayed with her at the services between each leg as they went North.

The Dodge went on a heck of a first outing in September around England. Covering 788 miles around the Yorkshire Dales and Peak District over 5 days.
I will be posting about this trip and it's results and by the time I am finished you will all be up to speed with the Dodges current condition.

A video from the trip around England. We were heading to the Peak District at this point, covering more motorway / dual carriageway miles. Although, if you hold the hand throttle in just the right place you don't need to keep your foot on the accelerator pedal 😁
