105 Cup Race Report
Oulton Park Gold Cup
29th to 31st August 2026

The 2026 Oulton Park Gold Cup will be remembered for not only it’s weather, but the exceptionally exciting racing that both competitors and spectators were treated to. At times biblical, the rain hit qualifying and both races, standing water, spray so dense drivers could barely see the car in front on occasions. But driving standards were high and there were no incidents involving damage, although there were a few excursions off the tarmac at times.

The 105 Cup, run by the Historic Sports Car Club, were once again sharing a grid with 70’s Roadsports, a pairing that has proven to be very successful all season.

In the GT class we saw Nick Edmond in his Giulia Saloon for the first time this season. An ex rally driver Edmond humbled most of the field in qualifying and race 1, pushing his car to the limit, the crowd loving his sideways approach to many of the corners. Nick won Race 1 splitting the faster GTA cars, followed by Jonny Horsfield who showed his experience in the wet conditions. Nick Peart was 3rd and Harrison Compton-Goddard 4th.

On Monday Race 2 saw a very wet start again but after a restart due to breakdown in lap 1 the track dried significantly. This eroded Edmonds advantage and lap times were much closer. Victory again went to Edmonds, but Peart came in second and Chris Compton-Goddard third.

In the GTV class there was a single runner, Jon Wagstaff, so he was odds on favourite for the Class win provided he could keep in on the black stuff in the very challenging conditions. With the faster GTA cars unable to put their power down on the slippery surface Wagstaff’s skills came to the fore, scrapping with Edmond in Race 1 and splitting the GTA’s to finish 3rd overall. An even better performance in race 2 humbled the whole grid with Wagstaff, enjoying the rain, coming in 1st Alfa – an overall win.

The GTA’s saw some very tight racing in race 1 between Alex Child and Andy Hill. The spectators very much enjoyed Childs somewhat exuberant driving style, his rear end dancing through every corner as his teetered on the edge. Hill sat on Childs tail for the whole race, unable to get past and finished second. Nigel Musto finished third followed by Paul Wallis in 4th.

Race 2 saw a bit of a shake up as Child got a poor start and Hill got ahead in the first corner putting a few cars between him and Child who also had Musto on his tail. In his desperation to catch up Child came off at Lodge but managed to get back on the tarmac just in front of Musto who was getting faster and faster, this weekend being his first in the rain. As Hill built his lead Child came off again at Cascade letting Musto through who started eating into Hills lead. With 2 laps to go Hill span at Lodge, stationary for just enough time for Musto to drive past into the lead, a position he hung on to until the finish.

Despite the weather everyone was thrilled by the Gold Cup experience. They say it’s the wet ones you will always remember and that will certainly be true of this event. A very successful weekend of racing. Our thanks to the HSCC, 70’s Roadsports whose driving standards in the very poor conditions were exceptional and to Oulton Park.

The next event will be the finals at Silverstone on 10th and 11th October.

Marcus Pye writes;
THE ENORMITY OF THE CLASSIC FORMULA 3 ASSOCIATION’S 40th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION AT CASTLE COMBE, where the inaugural race was held in May 1986, has now just about sunk in after a fortnight. As its co-founder with the late Tony Broster, Roy Topp and others it was an honour and a joy to have racers compete for the Marcus Pye Trophy - thank you HSCC - and emotional to commentate on the best grid of multi-marque F3 cars and enthusiastic owners in years alongside Alistair Douglas and Martin Bennett at the HSCC’s Diamond Jubilee meeting, thanks to CF3A ringmasters Bruce Balchin and Hugh Price. Congratulations to Benn Tilley 🇬🇧 (ex-Mike White 🇿🇦 March-Toyota 803B) for winning both races, James Hadfield 🇬🇧 (ex-Brian Henton/Rupert Keegan 🇬🇧 March-Toyota 743) for presssuring him all the way on both days and period F3 racer Gary Ward 🇬🇧 (ex-Didier Theys 🇧🇪 Ralt-VW RT3) for finishing third on aggregate to join the young guns on the podium. It was brilliant to see previous champions Steve Bradley 🇬🇧, Mark Bailey 🇬🇧, Steve Maxted 🇬🇧, Steve Collier 🇬🇧, John Davies 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿, Simon Ford 🇬🇧, Keith White 🇬🇧, Benn Simms 🇬🇧, Simon Jackson 🇬🇧, Tilley and Steve Barlow 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 at Combe. Plus former competitors Richard Clarke, Peter Fairbairn, Alastair Ferguson [“Saeed Al-Ferg”], Vince Horsley, Reg James, Colin Painter, Paul Quinn, Richard Ranson, Iain Rowley, Paul Tickner, Richard Trott and John Watson enjoying the weekend’s hospitality under the awning of Gary Ward’s superb transporter. Apologies to anybody who has slipped under the radar. I look back on my active involvement with Classic F3 very fondly, particularly winning a race at Donington in my ex-Thierry Tassin 🇧🇪/Jan Ridell 🇸🇪Argo JM6 and lending it to future champion Bill Coombs, Snetterton winner Adrian Cottrell, the late Mike Adams and the recently departed Chris Winter in 1986, and my second ex-David Sears 🇬🇧/Jan Thoelke 🇩🇪 JM6 to Tony Broster to win in at Brands Hatch at the end of 1987. Happy Days in the era when proper cars could be bought and run on a shoestring, or at least an ordinary wage! Photos: James @ Red Water Images 🏁🇬🇧🏆

The HSCC says, congratulations to Hugh Price and Bruce Balchin for making this in to such a great event. If you want more races like this talk to them......

DIAMOND JUBILEE PARTY TIME AT CASTLE COMBE
Summary report: Marcus Pye

The Historic Sports Car Club has turned 60 and where else to celebrate the landmark than Castle Combe, where the Griffiths Formula race at the Wiltshire circuit on May 14, 1966 – within a Frazer Nash CC event – seeded its formation.

The sun shone relentlessly over the August 8-9 weekend and the very Jaguar D-type – Le Mans veteran XKD504 which won that pioneering race in Neil Corner’s hands – lives locally and with owner Christian Albrecht up finished second to Gary Pearson’s sister car in the splendid Griffiths Haig Trophy retrospective organised by Tony Bianchi.

The HSCC @ 60 Summer Historic Festival, whose souvenir programme also featured the 40th anniversary of the Classic Formula 3 Association, whose first race took place at Castle Combe in May 1986.

The double-header for the Marcus Pye Trophy – named for the CF3A’s co-founder and early race winner – attracted the strongest entry in years. Prior to its first race on Saturday a grid walkabout enabled spectators to mingle with the colourful cars and drivers. Benn Tilley and James Hadfield, in March-Toyotas they had not previously raced, scrapped for supremacy on both days, Benn taking the prize by 0.6s on aggregate.

Benn Simms – after whom Tilley was named! – won the Historic Formula Ford races, but there was a new victor in the SDC Classic FF1600 arena when Cal Bennett aced the second race, points leader Tom Gadd having claimed Saturday’s opener.

Another Ben, Glasswell, was beaten for the first time in Historic FF2000, returnee Jordan Harrison uncatchable in father Mark’s Lola on a guest outing. Historic One-Litre F3 saw the third double vector of the season in defending champion Pete de la Roche (Alexis Mk17).

A superb Road Sports pack was topped by Historic runners. Mark Godfrey (Lotus 7) took the first and previous champion John Shaw the finale in his rumbling Morgan Plus 8 after Richard Plant went autocrossing down Howard’s Way in his example. On his seasonal debut, Julian Barter (TVR 3000M) was the first ’70s finisher in both races, while Ben Brain earned 105-Cup Alfa Romeo golds.

Elliot Paterson, claimed his third Guards Trophy win of the season in the family Ginetta-BMW G16 formerly owned by Combe stalwart George Douglas. Mark Colman in a similarly powered Chevron B8 put up a stern early fight. Peter Thompson was first and second in the GT split, sharing TVR Griffith and Shelby Cobra with Jon Payne and Charlie Allison respectively.

HSCC Diamond Award – Castle Combe

The Diamond Award is presented to Paul Booker and John Hayes-Harlow in recognition of their extraordinary courage and selflessness.

Without hesitation, and despite the grave danger posed by spilled petrol and rapidly spreading flames, Paul and John went to the aid of Andrew Tart, rescuing him from a burning car while he was himself on fire and saving him from more serious injuries.

Their decisive actions, bravery and complete disregard for their own safety embody the spirit that makes the HSCC what it is.

Paul and John are true diamonds and richly deserve this special recognition.

HISTORIC SALOONS PRE '66: OULTON PARK GOLD CUP

The club has not given up on its once very popular Historic Pre '66 Saloon category and have been working away quietly behind the scenes with help from Phil Wight

We have been pursuing the idea of 2x 20min, single driver sprint races with a competitive entry fee. Whilst the concept achieved a lot of positive vocal support it hadn't until recently resulted in the desired race entries.

We are now really excited to announce that for the Oulton Park Gold Cup (29-31 August) we currently have a very high quality 10 car grid, consisting of:
3x Lotus Cortinas
2x Ford Anglia 105E
1x Mini Cooper S (but are expecting more shortly)
A delightful Fiat Abarth 600 plus a few other interesting classic saloons variants.

The Historic Saloons will be grid sharing with early 1960s Lotus Elans S1 & S2s (no 26Rs) and both grids will be racing for their own 'Gold Cups'

With the help of social media to spread the word I am hoping we can push the saloon entry into the higher teens to create a combined grid of almost 30 cars.

The entry fee is just £625.00 for a total of 60min track time:
20min qualifying, 2x 20min races
Testing Saturday morning is also available for an extra (modest) fee.

If you are interest in joining the Historic Saloon grid at The Gold Cup event please contact the HSCC Office who will happily lead you through the entry process.

Please phone or email. The club's contact details can be found on the HSCC website: https://www.hscc.uk/

GORGEOUS GUARDS GRID AT COMBE

Small in numbers but very big in quality, Guards put on great show at the HSCC 60th Anniversary meeting at Castle Combe. Ginetta, Chevron, Merlyn, Crossle, TVR Griffith, Shelby Cobra, XK120 and Lola Mk1 were gathered together. They looked perfectly appropriate together on the track.
For a while it looked like the Colman B8 would challenge for the lead. When with temperature issues it dropped away, the Paterson Ginetta eased to the flag just 11 seconds ahead after the 50 minute race. Early on the Gemmill Crossle looked up for its first podium but it succumbed to a gearbox issue. This left the hard charging Thompson Payne TVR Griffith to take the remaining podium place ahead of the Thompson Allison Shelby Cobra. Ambient temperature and the racing were hot, hot, hot. TVR's brakes told the story!
There were lots of smiles on the podium after an enjoyable race.
Now on to the Gold Cup in a few weeks where we already have 21 entries. Should be a great meeting.

Another crowd pleaser......for the spectators on the banks for HFF race 2 at Combe. Benn Simms (Jomo) got a lightning start and built a secure lead from the squabbling, following cars. A group of 5 cars swapped positions corner after corner. At the flag they were separated by just 0.6 secs. Remarkably, in the chase for the line Olly Chapman (Lola) grabbed second from Jacques Jensen (Merlyn) by 0.083 sec. (Was this Jacques first podium?). These two were followed over the line by the noseless Palliser of Mads Gravsen, Rob Wainright (Elden) and Joey Foster who was being gentle with an unfamiliar Crossle. Again that was six marques in the top six places.
Gislain Genecand took the over 50 award in his Crossle, Gareth Jones (Lotus 51) was lead novice.
Notably Jack Bradley (Lotus 61) had a good run in only his second race. Benefitting from a spare radiator kindly leant to him by Dick Dixon, he tracked Gareth Jones and Peter Lavender (Merlyn) for much of the race

All very enjoyable, the crowd loved it. Now on to the Gold Cup. Already at 24 entries and growing.

HSCC / GRIFFITHS HAIG 60TH ANNIVERSARY

On 14 May 1966 Neil Corner won the inaugural Griffiths Formula race at Castle Combe in his Jaguar D-type from Chris Warwick-Drake and John Le Sage, thus creating the first chapter of the HSCC’s colourful story.

60 years, 12 weeks and 2 days later the Castle Combe Racing Club hosted the HSCCs 60th Anniversary at their inaugural Summer Historic Festival. With the baking sunshine and infield filled with golden straw bales the event had the atmosphere of an authentic historic meeting with both cars and drivers accessible to the public (from a time before corporate hospitality and razzmatazz arrived).

The entry for Saturday’s 50-minute event was headed by a trio of D-types, with Christian Albrecht in the ’66 race-winner. Gary Pearson brought one from the family’s legendary Jaguar stable and Ben Eastick his familiar example. Justin Beckett saddles a C-type and David Brazell an historic Lister-Jaguar.

Race co-ordinator Tony Bianchi and Gareth Evans were in thunderous Allard-Cadillac J2Xs, and the intrepid John Young aboard a rare American Kellison-Chevrolet.

A trio of nimble Lola Mk1s were guaranteed to delight with Sir John Chisholm, Jurg Tobler and Robin Longdon, plus the quick Lotus Elite of David Alexander.

Rarities include the remarkable ex-Graham Hill Willment-Climax of Andy Storer – dormant, for almost 70 years before it reappeared at Silverstone last summer – and Daisy Bellamy’s Falcon-MG in the hands of long-time Marcos-Volvo GT racer Andrew Smith.

A rorty Cooper-Bristol, plus Austin-Healey 100/4, Elvas (Mark 5 and Courier) and a rapid Morgan Plus 4 Super Sports completed the representative 26 car pack.

Gary Pearson lead initially before Christian Albrecht moved into the lead at the end of lap 2, Gary shadowed his rival less than 1 second behind until Christian Albrecht pitted on lap 16, Garry pitted 4 laps later and by the time everyone had stopped Gary held a lead of almost 6 seconds.

Unfortunately after the pit stops Kyle Tilley (in for Albrecht) got stuck behind Tony Bianchi’s Allard and couldn’t get past – allowing Pearson to build a cushion of just over 30sec by the flag

The Lotus Elite of David Alexander stayed on the led lap although almost 1:20sec behind at the flag giving away 2sec a lap to the more powerful D-Types but still managing to finish ahead of Ben Eastick ‘s D-Type.

There were some entertaining battles in the midfield, Andrew Smith finished a creditable 5th in the Falcon ahead of Jonathan Cobbs Cooper Bristol, Tony Bianchi, Farrelac-Allard Mk11 and Clive Richards Mk1 Lotus 7. Justin Beckett brought his C-Type home just 1.183sec ahead of the XK120 of Ian Beattie.
