⚠️ Beach Safety Update - Thursday, 25th June ⚠️
Due to the forecast of rapidly changing weather conditions, Sidmouth Beach Lifeguards will be extending their additional beach cover tomorrow (Friday, 26th June) to help keep beach visitors safe.
While temperatures remain high, the latest forecast also indicates a risk of thunderstorms developing across the South Coast. These storms could arrive quickly, bringing strong gusts of wind, frequent lightning, heavy rain and hail. Conditions can deteriorate in a matter of minutes, even if the weather initially appears calm.
If you're planning a trip to the beach after work or during the evening, please be aware that the weather may change much faster than expected.
If you're heading onto the water:
🛟 Always wear a lifejacket or buoyancy aid.
📱 Carry a fully charged mobile phone in a waterproof pouch so you can call for help if needed.
🏄♀️ Be especially cautious if using paddleboards, kayaks or other small craft, as strong offshore winds can develop suddenly and quickly carry you away from the shore.
⚡ If you hear thunder or see lightning, leave the water immediately and seek safe shelter. Water is not a safe place to be during a thunderstorm.
🌊 If you get into difficulty in the water, stay calm, lean back, control your breathing, then call for help or swim to safety.
🚩 Please pay attention to the advice of our lifeguards and any beach safety flags or signage. They are there to help you enjoy the coast safely.
We ask that everyone enjoy Sidmouth's beautiful coastline safely and responsibly. Taking a few simple precautions and staying aware of the changing conditions could make all the difference.
If you need assistance on the beach, speak to one of our lifeguards. In an emergency on the coast, always call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
