As a result, the shift from petrol to diesel propulsion is becoming a key driver of change. While this transition is often associated with new builds, repowering existing vessels is proving an equally effective route. Cox Marine has received market feedback from South Korea indicating that its diesel outboard technology is delivering even greater fuel efficiency benefits than expected in the country's expanding seaweed harvesting industry, with operators reporting fuel savings of up to 50% compared with gasoline alternatives.

Hugh Hudleston comments:

"We typically cite fuel savings of around 30% compared with equivalent gasoline outboards. It's encouraging to see feedback from South Korea suggesting even greater gains in demanding commercial applications where vessels are heavily loaded and fuel costs are a key consideration."

At the centre of the project is Sea Machines Robotics STORMRUNNER, an 8‑metre autonomous USV designed for offshore operations, combining high speed, long endurance and a modular payload architecture. The platform has been selected to demonstrate Leonardo DRS, Inc. Maritime Mission Equipment Package (MMEP), integrating radar, electrooptical/infrared sensors and AI-enabled command and control to detect and respond to aerial drone threats in real time.

The platform incorporates a twin 300hp V8 diesel outboard configuration, providing the high torque, fuel efficiency and reliability required to achieve its high speed, long endurance operational profile, while supporting integration with onboard systems and remote operations.

Meet Petra Argent, Company Secretary at Cox Marine.

Petra joined Cox Marine in 2012, when the business was just a handful of people. Today, alongside her company secretarial responsibilities, she looks after employee remuneration and incentive schemes.’

Over that time, she has seen the company grow while maintaining an environment where the doors are open to everyone and people are encouraged to give their best, whatever their role.
