🚽 Look after your toilet cassette seal!

If the toilet blade becomes stiff to open or close, don’t force it. The rubber lip seal may be dry, dirty or starting to deteriorate, and forcing the mechanism could cause damage or lead to unpleasant leaks.

To help keep it working smoothly:

✅ Empty and rinse the cassette regularly
✅ Clean around the blade and rubber seal carefully
✅ Use a lubricant specifically designed for caravan toilet seals
✅ Avoid petroleum-based oils or household sprays, as they may damage the rubber
✅ Never force a stiff or jammed blade
✅ Replace a swollen, split or leaking seal

If the mechanism remains stiff or the cassette is leaking, JB Caravans can inspect it and supply the correct replacement parts.

⚠️ COMBUSTION READINGS AREN’T OPTIONAL TO US — THEY’RE AN ESSENTIAL PART OF A PROPER SERVICE ⚠️

This video from Motorhome Matt explains why it is so important to check the combustion readings from both boiler and fridge flues—especially when those flues discharge into an awning.

An appliance may appear to be working normally, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it is burning cleanly or safely. Poor combustion can produce dangerous levels of carbon monoxide, which you cannot see, smell or taste.

At Gas Safe registered JB Caravans, combustion analysis forms part of our servicing and gas-safety procedures where applicable. We use professional equipment to measure the flue gases and confirm that appliances are operating safely—not simply assume they are because the flame is lit.

⚠️ “THAT’S HOW I’VE ALWAYS DONE IT” ISN’T GOOD ENOUGH ⚠️

Almost every day—both in our workshop and across social media—we see appliances, accessories and complete systems fitted to caravans and motorhomes without following the manufacturer’s instructions.

The installation may look tidy. The appliance may even appear to work—but that doesn’t automatically mean it has been installed correctly or safely.

Whether it’s a:

✅ Boiler, heater or fridge
✅ Refillable LPG or Gaslow system
✅ Solar panel or lithium battery
✅ Inverter, charger or 240V equipment
✅ Motor mover or air-conditioning unit
✅ Wi-Fi system, awning or other accessory

Every product has its own specific installation requirements covering areas such as:

🔧 Mounting positions and clearances
🔧 Ventilation and flue arrangements
🔧 Regulators, hoses and gas pipework
🔧 Cable sizes, fuses and isolation
🔧 Filling points and safety devices
🔧 Commissioning, testing and certification

Even if a technician has fitted similar equipment before, it doesn’t mean every product or installation is the same.

Products change. Instructions change. Different manufacturers specify different methods.

Experience matters—but experience must always be supported by the latest instructions for the exact product being installed.

🧽 Be careful where you point that pressure washer!

A pressure washer might make cleaning your caravan quicker, but forcing high-pressure water directly at seals and openings can create problems you won’t notice until damp appears inside.

When washing your caravan:

✅ Use a caravan-safe cleaning product
✅ Wash with a soft brush, sponge or low-pressure rinse
✅ Keep high-pressure jets away from window seals, rooflights, awning rails and panel joints
✅ Never spray directly into fridge, boiler or heater vents
✅ Check sealant for cracks, gaps or lifting while you clean

Spotting a deteriorating seal early can prevent a much larger and more expensive damp repair later.

🛞 Don’t judge your caravan tyres by tread alone!

Caravan tyres can still look nearly new because they cover fewer miles than car tyres—but age, sunlight and long periods standing can cause the rubber to deteriorate.

Before your next trip:

✅ Check for cracking, bulges, cuts or anything embedded in the tread
✅ Set the pressures while the tyres are cold, following the caravan manufacturer’s figures
✅ Inspect the inner sidewalls as well as the parts you can easily see
✅ Check the tyre’s age and condition—even if there is plenty of tread remaining
✅ Don’t forget the spare wheel!

If you’re unsure about their condition, have them professionally inspected before travelling. JB Caravans can check your tyres, wheels, brakes and running gear as part of a proper caravan service.

I’ve just seen a TikTok from Motorhome Matt, who runs a popular motorhome podcast and channel, raising a very important point:

When your caravan or motorhome has a habitation check, are the carbon monoxide readings from the boiler and fridge flues actually being tested while the appliances are running on gas?

At JB Caravans, we have always checked gas combustion as part of our commitment to customer safety.

What’s new is the technology.

Our combustion analyser can now send the results by Bluetooth directly to a printer—so we can provide you with a physical printed report showing the actual readings recorded during the test.

✅ Boiler tested while operating on gas
✅ Fridge tested while operating on gas
✅ Carbon monoxide readings checked
✅ Combustion performance assessed
✅ Results sent by Bluetooth and printed
✅ A physical report supplied to the customer
✅ This is why we dedicate a full 4.5hrs on every service

A flame may look acceptable, but that doesn’t automatically mean the appliance is burning safely. Incomplete combustion can produce dangerous levels of carbon monoxide—a gas you cannot see, smell or taste.

We don’t simply say that your appliances appear to be working correctly. We test them properly and can now provide the printed readings to support it.

When booking a habitation check, ask:

“Do you carry out combustion analysis, and will I receive a printed report?”
