As the summer heat fades and the rain rolls in, we’d highly recommend giving your car a quick check to see if everything is safe.
After weeks of baking under the sun, your tyres have taken a beating from UV rays and hot tarmac. Now that temperatures are finally dropping, the air inside your tyres will contract, which means you’re losing roughly 1 PSI for every 5.6°C temperature drop.
Combine underinflated tyres with wet, slippery roads from sudden heavy rainfalls and your grip, braking distance and safety are instantly compromised.
You can quickly check your tyres yourself or bring them in to us and we’ll do a free check on them for you. If you want to check them yourself you need to do the following:
1) Check the pressure - Cool autumn air drops your tyre pressure, so top them up to your car’s correct specifications.
2) Inspect your tread depth - You need deep grooves to pump water away and prevent dangerous aquaplaning on wet roads. The recommended tread depth for safe driving is 3 mm, especially in wet weather. While the UK legal minimum is 1.6 mm, tyre performance and stopping distances drop significantly once the tread wears past 3 mm.
3) Look for sun damage - Check for any hidden cracks, brittleness or bulges, if you spot any problems let us know and we’ll see if we can repair it or if it needs a replacement!
