Is your car's MOT due in September or October? Drivers urged to book as soon as possible as Covid extension means 1.3m extra tests these months

We are currently booking mots just under 2 weeks ahead of ourselves. If your car has been in before, we should send you a reminder around 3 weeks before it is due. You can check your mot due date on the following link: https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history

You can book your mot in a day under a month before it is due, and it is advisable to do it early. Any extra days it is early are automatically added on the 12 month mot ticket once the mot is done.

DVSA estimates there will be a 22% increase in MOTs in September and October than before the pandemic as a knock-on effect of the six-month exemption between 30 March and 31 July 2020.

The MOT exemption ended on 1st August. Millions of vehicles will need their MOT in an autumn. If your MOT is due later this year, consider getting it done during August, when garages will be quieter.

We are already seeing a rise in mot book ins, you can get your test done up to a month (minus a day) early and still retain the renewal date.

Mandatory MOT testing to be reintroduced from 1 August

Mandatory MOT testing is to be reintroduced from 1 August 2020 as COVID-19 restrictions are slowly lifted, Roads minister Baroness Vere has announced today (29 June 2020).

Due to the coronavirus outbreak, drivers were granted a 6-month exemption from MOT testing in March to help slow the spread of the virus. However, as restrictions are eased when safe to do so, all drivers whose car, motorcycle or van is due for an MOT test from 1 August will be required to get a test certificate to continue driving their vehicle.

MOT tests are important for road safety and ensure that vehicle parts, including tyres, seatbelts, brakes, lights and exhausts, are in proper working order.

Drivers with an MOT due date before 1 August will still receive a 6-month exemption from testing. However, all vehicles must continue to be properly maintained and kept in a roadworthy condition, and people are able to voluntarily get their MOT sooner should they wish, even if they are exempt from the legal requirement. Motorists can be prosecuted for driving an unsafe vehicle.
