CHANGES TO BE MADE TO THE PRACTICAL DRIVING TEST FROM 24/11
You may have seen the DVSA announced today that "subtle but meaningful changes" are being made to the practical driving test. These changes will commence on 24th November.
The changes include:
π₯ increased time driving on routes containing high speed and rural roads, if the test centre location allows
π₯ reducing the number of times you are asked to pull up at the side of the road during the test from 4 to 3
π₯ lowering the frequency of emergency stop exercises from 1 in 3 tests to 1 in 7
π₯ adding flexibility to the independent driving segment, allowing it to run for the full duration of the test
The idea is that these changes will help improve road safety by better replicating the conditions motorists face in the real world.
If your test is coming up in next month or so as these changes take place, don't panic! These are small changes and reflect what we learn on lessons anyway but I will talk with you more in car about it all. I won't know much myself until the changes come into effect but will of course keep you all updated. Any worries or questions, as always, just message or ask in car.

Weβre making some subtle but meaningful changes to the practical driving test. π
You may have seen that we have been trialling changes to the driving test at 20 driving test centres.
As part of the trial, learners drove on routes containing more high-speed, rural roads during their driving test, where location allowed. Now, we are rolling out the changes to all driving test centres in Great Britain from 24 November 2025.
As well as increasing the amount of time spent on higher-speed roads, we are:
β
reducing the number of stops during the test from 4 to 3
β
lowering the frequency of emergency stop exercises from 1 in 3 tests to 1 in 7
β
adding flexibility to the independent driving segment, allowing it to run for the full duration of the test
These changes are designed to help improve road safety by better replicating the conditions motorists face in the real world. They wonβt affect the skills needed to take a driving test.
