By celebrating another success at the test centre, that’s how! 🎉

Another of the Hemingbrough legends has crossed the finish line today!! 🏁

A HUGE well done to Ivy, who achieved a FIRST-TIME PASS in York today with just FOUR driving faults! 🚙👏

Ivy started her driving journey in the “Fezzy Bomber” before switching to lessons in her own car. However, having reached a level of coolness that can only be achieved by a select few, (and few mechanical issues with her car) meant she switched back to the Fiesta just TWO DAYS before her test!

Taking it all in her stride, Ivy turned up today, delivered a steady drive and walked away with her full licence! 💪

Now, learning to drive has been a pretty quick process for Ivy. With plenty of private practice with Mum and Dad, Mum even joining us for a ride-along a few weeks back, and a really positive approach to learning, we were able to bring her test date forward by a whole month!

To say Ivy is a switched-on, squared-away young lady is the understatement of the year.

Ivy first contacted me in JANUARY after her neighbours had learnt to drive with me. However, with her birthday not until July, she still had a little wait ahead of her!

A lesson on her birthday and a few short months later, she was ready to head off to test. This meant Ivy only had a few short months of experiencing my absolutely incredible jokes. 😂

Those who learn to drive with me know just how good my jokes are (or, at least, how much I think they are!). But Ivy has officially earned the title of “Best In-Car Joke” after one particular moment at a police checkpoint.

While driving through, she casually came out with:

“If the police are arresting people for using their mirrors, I’ll be fine, as I’ve not checked mine all day!” 🤣

After several awkward minutes of silence, I was absolutely FURIOUS that I hadn’t thought of saying it first. I eventually laughed and pretended I found it funny. 😂

From terrible jokes to misheard instructions involving “two cartons” (Ivy, YOU KNOW what I was saying! 🤦‍♂️😂), it’s been an absolutely brilliant few months.

Ivy, I really appreciate the effort you’ve put in, the way you’ve worked hard, being out to the car on time EVERY SINGLE TIME, and throwing yourself into everything we’ve done.

You’ve been an absolute pleasure to teach, and today’s result is thoroughly deserved!

Thank you for choosing me, Ivy. Now go and enjoy that freedom! 🚙💨

Oh! Livia!!!!! 🚗🎉
Olivia, WHAT a drive! Just 30 hours behind the wheel, with plenty of help from superheroes in the shape of Mum and Dad, who need a big mention because of all the work they’ve put in, and today Olivia secured her FIRST-TIME PASS in York! 🥳👏

When you’re looking out of the test centre window and see two cars almost collide, while Olivia is calmly waiting and watching it all unfold before she’s even attempted to move off, you just know it’s going to be a good drive!

Even when Olivia was the last one back because of the queue of traffic getting into the test centre, it didn’t worry me one bit. I knew she’d be completely unflappable!
Now, Olivia isn’t exactly used to coming last! In fact, she’s currently the fastest 17-year-old swimmer in Yorkshire. With a level of competition calmness that the pros would be proud of, she certainly knows how to handle pressure!

A tricky reverse bay park in a small car park, with just one lonely bay left? No problem! ✅
An emergency stop on top of an already superb drive? Come on!!! 💪

But Olivia doesn’t do things by halves! A first-time pass simply wasn’t enough today, so she only went and achieved it A MONTH EARLY AND WITH ZERO DRIVER FAULTS!!! 🤯👏🏆

Olivia’s only downfall today? Ahem… misplacing her licence at the end of the test! Cue me flapping and panicking! 😂🤦‍♂️
Olivia, you’ve worked so hard to get to this point, and thank you for being such a pleasure to teach! ❤️

We’ve had plenty of laughs along the way, and today’s drive showed just how much you’ve developed and how well you can handle whatever the road throws at you.
You’ve got a fantastic attitude, a cool head under pressure and so much to be proud of.
Enjoy that freedom, Olivia. You’ve absolutely earned it! 🚙💨

Selby’s latest superstar is Alice! 🌟🚙
Small but mighty Alice made easy work of her driving test today in Walton, with just 2 driver faults and not much in the way of feedback — just a really nice overall drive. 👏
So, let’s go back just 5 months…
Alice came to me after a few bumps in the road, having been messed about by others.

Defeating nerves and rediscovering confidence were more of a hope and a dream at that point.

A few lessons in and Alice decided she wanted to take her test in her own car because she’s a lady with a strong mind and knows exactly what she wants to do.
(Yes, she has spoken to me A LOT about what car she wants to drive… 😂)

Meanwhile, my Fiesta was sat crying outside Alice’s house after being completely abandoned, so we got on with building confidence, skills and resilience in an even classier style — using her partner’s lovely car instead.

Sorry Fezzy. 😂

Last-minute drives last night, every emotion known to man today, and then a solid drive this morning saw Alice complete something she genuinely thought she might never do.

Normally it’s me with the running commentary of bad jokes, life stuff and a bit of driving instruction thrown in between, but it’s honestly just been a bit of a laugh in the car with Alice.

From spotting kiwi fruits in the road 🥝 to having some very honest conversations that definitely won’t be repeated via social media… 😂

And to all those who thought Alice wouldn’t do it — you know who you are.

Well… sorry guys.

She’s only gone and done it. 🎉

And she’s done it in style, with just 2 faults!

Alice, give me a wave, mate, and go and ENJOY IT! 🚙💨

Big congratulations to Harry who is Selby’s latest full licence holder passing this morning in York at the first attempt with 8 faults.

When you teach siblings you get a heads up about what to look out for but Harry couldn’t have been different to his Brother a few years ago.

Much quieter, taking a lot longer to put me back in my place about my bad jokes but then flourishing in car and becoming a superb driver.

Sometimes what we see daily in car doesn’t reflect the test day and this showed today with Harry keeping the examiner earning his money but with a pass nonetheless. Showing that from a quiet, unassuming day one can lead to a confident driver that despite the nerves can overcome it at the first time of trying.

Harry! I’m super proud of you mate and travelling along this stage of your life and being even a small part of help towards you getting the result today was my pleasure so thank you. 🚙

Super competitive Charlotte aced it in York today. 3 faults and a first time pass, making light work of the road closures and chaos that is Monks Cross!!

Not one to let her sister have the upper hand with less faults or her boyfriend do it better than her, we won’t mention anything more about that, Char went and blitzed it today with a really nice drive and positive feedback.

Char has spent a few short months getting to grips with it all and had the support of her lovely family between lessons. Always turning up to lessons ready to go, smile on her face and working hard. Thanks Char, you’ve been a great laugh, go and enjoy it mate. 🚙

🚙 What does the “L” really mean?

When you see an L plate on the back of a car, most people know what it means:

Learner.

It tells you that the person behind the wheel is still learning.

They’re gaining experience, building confidence and working towards becoming a safe, independent driver.

So, if you see an L plate ahead of you, please give them time, space, patience and courtesy. ❤️

But maybe that little L means so much more than “Learner”.

It could mean…

🛟 “L”IFELINE

For some learners, passing their test and becoming road-ready could genuinely change their life.

It could mean being able to get to work, attend appointments, take children to school, or drive loved ones where they need to be.

Their licence may be the difference between independence and relying on others.

⏰ “L”EFT IT TOO LATE

The learner in front of you might feel like they’ve left learning until later in life.

They could be carrying every negative emotion imaginable — embarrassment, frustration, anxiety, self-doubt or regret.

They may have spent years telling themselves:

“I should have done this sooner.”

💪 “L”EARNING

They are learning.

They will make mistakes.

They may hesitate at a junction, stall, take a little longer to make a decision or get flustered when you’re close behind them.

That doesn’t necessarily mean they’re unsafe.

It means they’re still learning.

🌱 “L”IVING

Behind that windscreen is a real person with a real reason for being there.

Maybe they’re learning because they want freedom.

Maybe they’re doing it for their family.

Maybe they’re rebuilding their confidence.

Maybe they’re proving something to themselves.

Maybe getting that licence means more to them than you’ll ever know.

❤️ “L”OVED ONE

The learner in front of you could be your loved one.

Your son.
Your daughter.
Your brother.
Your sister.
Your partner.
Your grandchild.
Your friend.

Someone you love could be sitting in that driver’s seat, trying their best to learn something that may be completely new and incredibly challenging for them.

So before getting frustrated, remember how you’d want other drivers to treat your loved one.

So next time you see an L plate, remember:

You don’t know what that “L” means to the person sitting behind the wheel.

You only know they’re learning.

So give them a little more space.
Give them a little more time.
Be patient.
Be courteous.

Because that learner may not just be learning to drive.

They may be learning to live a life with opportunities they haven’t had before. ❤️

🚗 L doesn’t just mean Learner.

And sometimes, all that learner needs from you is a little patience.

Because one day, that L plate could be on the back of a car being driven by someone you love. ❤️

If all else fails and you still find yourself beeping, flashing your lights, revving and waving your hands like some subject matter expert, ask yourself how much YOU value YOUR licence and that the Dash Camera is running and my current positive action quota with Operation Snap is 100%

Congratulations to Jack on a first time, 2 fault pass today in Walton.

I can’t say enough good things about Jack.

Mild mannered, considerate and such a hard worker Jack has spent a mere 17 hours worth of professional lessons with me.

Jack’s parents kicked it all off before lesson 1, meaning that my job was just to tidy it all up and make sure Jack was road ready ahead of test day.

Keeping it interesting, the day before test, Jack flipped the script by opting to do the practical in his own car…thankfully he’s cool enough to drive a fiesta, so no drama’s there.

I love test day, love being part of the journey and sharing even a small part of finding success on the main day is a feeling I hope never goes away for me and to be privy to the post test conversation between Jack and his Dad gives me a reminder why we do this.

Thank you Jack for turning up every time, bringing maximum effort and for blitzing it.

A proud day all around for Jack, his lovely family and for me.
