Brake before the bend.
Not during it.

Rural roads may look calm, but they can punish bad timing very quickly. Many serious crashes happen because drivers carry too much speed into a bend, then try to brake once they are already turning.

That is where things start to go wrong.

Braking mid bend shifts the car’s weight forward and can reduce stability. Your tyres are then trying to steer and slow the car at the same time, which means grip is being shared. On wet, uneven, muddy or narrow rural roads, that loss of balance can catch drivers out very quickly.

That is why the safer habit is simple.

Slow before the bend.
Choose a safe speed early.
Steer smoothly through it.
Then accelerate gently as the road opens up.

That keeps the car more settled, the tyres working properly, and the driver in better control.

The countryside is beautiful, but beauty can hide danger.

Every bend deserves respect.

This image is such a simple but powerful reminder of something most drivers think they understand… but often do not apply properly.

Your mirrors do not show you everything.

The rear view mirror gives you a narrow, central picture of what is directly behind.

Your left and right mirrors widen that picture.

But those red areas?

Those are your blind spots.

They are real.
They are bigger than people think.
And they are exactly where motorcyclists, cyclists and small cars disappear.

Peripheral vision helps.
Mirror checks help.
But neither replaces a proper shoulder check before changing lane or moving off.

Too many collisions happen because someone says,
“I did not see them.”

The truth is often:
You looked.
You just did not look properly.

Mirrors are information.
A glance over your shoulder is confirmation.

If you are relying only on mirrors, you are guessing.

And guessing at speed is not driving.
It is gambling.

Get ready for the driving test booking rule changes. 🚗👇

From 31 March 2026, learner drivers and approved driving instructors (ADIs) will only be able to make 2 changes to a practical car driving test booking.

A change includes:
- changing the date or time
- changing the test centre
- swapping a test between 2 learners

If you’re an ADI, we’d encourage you to make sure your pupils only book their test when they’re ready to take it and in a location they can easily travel to.
