This isn’t a post to put anyone off building their own campervan — we actually love seeing self-builds and the amount of time, effort and care people put into them.

But we do want to raise a bit of awareness around electrics and gas.

We recently had a van come back to us after the owner had chosen to have the electrics done elsewhere. When we checked the system, we found burn marks, poorly connected wiring and cabling that had started to melt.

That’s the part that worries us.

Campervan electrics are very different to household electrics, and although there is so much brilliant information online, watching videos and doing research isn’t always the same as having the experience to know when something isn’t safe.

So if you’re building your own van, absolutely enjoy the process, learn new skills and do as much as you feel confident doing.

Just know when to ask for help.

And if you’ve bought a converted van and you’re unsure about the electrics, get them checked. If you’d like us to take a look, just drop us a message or give us a call.

We’re not here to scare anyone or criticise self-builders. We just want people to enjoy their campervans, make amazing memories and, most importantly, stay safe while doing it.

As much as I love the sunshine and long summer days, there’s something magical about campervan adventures during the cooler months.

A walk around a lovely village, tea and cake in a cosy coffee shop, then back to the campervan for a warm evening—it’s one of my favourite ways to spend a day.

We probably use our van just as much during autumn and winter as we do in summer. The trips might look a little different, but the freedom and adventure are still there.

This is also when we start planning what’s coming next. We look at events, think about places we’d like to explore and get a few dates in the diary. Having another adventure to look forward to is all part of the fun.

Whitby Goth Weekend, Harrogate Christmas Market and a spooky ghost walk around York are already on our list. We’re even thinking about where to spend New Year’s Eve—but that might need a whole post of its own!

Walking the dog in your pyjamas? Acceptable.

Putting the fairy lights on before it’s dark? Absolutely acceptable.

Leaving rubbish behind, blocking access or emptying your toilet somewhere you shouldn’t? Definitely not acceptable.

Campervan life should be relaxed, spontaneous, and full of freedom, but looking after the places we visit means we can all continue to enjoy them.

In true British bank holiday style, it looks like we’ve got a rainy weekend ahead! ☔️

But we’re not letting that stop us. We’re heading to Wollaton Park to watch Sing at the outdoor cinema—and although we’re not camping out, we’re still taking the campervan.

At least we’ll have somewhere warm and dry to retreat to afterwards! We might just need to pack a brolly or two…

As campervan converters—and people who actually use campervans—these are the three things we wouldn’t want to be without…

🔥 **A diesel heater**

The British weather doesn’t always cooperate, but that shouldn’t stop the adventure. A diesel heater plumbed directly into the van’s fuel tank means warmth at the touch of a button, making the van comfortable throughout the year.

🔋 **A reliable electrical system**

Your electrical system needs to suit the way you travel. From keeping the fridge running and charging your phones to powering lights and other essentials, it should give you the freedom to enjoy time away without constantly worrying about the battery.

🛏️ **A comfortable, practical bed**

A good night’s sleep can make all the difference to your trip. Whether it’s a fixed bed or one that converts from your seating area, it needs to be comfortable, easy to set up and designed around the space available.

For us, the best campervans aren’t simply packed with gadgets. They’re warm, reliable and comfortable—ready for weekends away, longer adventures and everything in between.

“Why don’t you just stay in a hotel?”
“Isn’t it a bit cramped?”
“Can’t you park anywhere?”
“It must save you loads of money!”

And our personal favourite… “You’re just glorified homeless people.”

Maybe we are — but we’ve got fairy lights, a diesel heater and the freedom to wake up somewhere completely different whenever we fancy. That’ll do us nicely! 🚐✨

Are campervans the problem… or do we simply need better places for them to stop?

There’s been a lot of discussion about campervan and motorhome parking recently. Some towns are introducing restrictions, height barriers and overnight bans, while others are trying a different approach — designated, paid overnight parking.

Cornwall Council now allows self-contained motorhomes to stay overnight in 11 of its car parks, following a successful trial in Bude.

This got us thinking…

Would you pay to stay overnight in a designated campervan area close to a town or city centre?

We’re not talking about a full campsite. No awnings, tables or setting up camp for the week. Just a safe, legal place to park for a night or two, perhaps within walking distance or a short bus ride from the town centre.

Would you prefer:

🚐 A small nightly charge
🚐 A yearly membership giving access to different locations
🚐 A pay-as-you-go system through an app

We’d also love to see more proper campervan service points around the UK — perhaps at motorway services or larger public car parks — where you could pay a small fee to:

💧 Fill up with fresh water
🚽 Empty your toilet responsibly
🪣 Dispose of grey water
♻️ Get rid of rubbish and recycling

Most campervan owners aren’t asking for everything to be free. We’d happily pay a reasonable charge for clean, well-maintained facilities and somewhere we know we’re welcome.

It could bring more visitors into towns, supporting independent shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants, while giving councils more control over where campervans stop and how waste is managed.
