Someone was very pleased with himself… 😅
John getting to the bottom of an intermittent noise on drive on this Freelander 2.

Skipping teeth on the front diff or PTU which was confirmed on removal of the unit.

Due to the intermittency of the fault the only way to diagnose this particular issue effectively was to use our knowledge of the vehicle, and how the 4x4 system actually works.

❌ The fault was intermittent and couldn’t be replicated up on a vehicle lift.

❌ No fault codes that help.

❌ No guesswork, only knowledge and hard graft getting to the bottom of the fault for the customer.

It was actually bitter sweet when John found the fault as he knew he had to put it back in again, so the customer could use the vehicle while parts were ordered. 🤣

Nice bit of preventative maintenance work carried out on a 2006 D3 2.7 TDV6. ⚙️

The older 2.7 unit is known for being more reliable than the later 3.0L engine. They do come with a couple of weak points which are easily ironed out with routine cam belt replacement. 💪
Firstly, the oil pumps have a weak point on the casing. The casing carries the cam belt tensioner and have been known to crack and break apart, causing the timing belt to let go.
Secondly, the cam belt pulleys are also known for breaking which throws the timing belt.
This can happen irrespective of when the timing belt was last changed if running the old parts.

The latest JLR parts have been upgraded to avoid this issue, that’s why we recommend that on belt replacement, we fit these extra parts:
The 2.7 requires the oil pump and pulleys
The 3.0 requires just the pulleys as they already have the later pump fitted.

We’ve been recommending the oil pump replacement on 2.7’s for many years now but it’s surprising how many are still running the weak pump 👎

These parts are applicable to all Jaguar/ Land Rover vehicles equipped with the TDV6 engine fitted between 2003-2020.

Of course this increases the price slightly but not as much as an engine rebuild if they fail…

The pulleys have only just become available as an updated design through Land Rover. These will be recommended on all timing belt replacements on the 3.0L V6 by us going forward.
That being said-if you own a JLR TDV6 vehicle and would like these components fitted, we can inspect your vehicle’s existing timing belt and make the necessary changes to keep your JLR vehicle reliable.

⚠️ Sometimes the smallest defect can cause the biggest failures … L405 4.4 SDV8 was recovered in to us for an investigation into excessive smoke from the exhaust whilst driving. 💨

🔍 An initial inspection was carried out and a staggering 2L of oil was drained from the intercooler, being sucked into the intake of the engine- how this Range Rover didn’t suffer from diesel run on I don’t know.
With the sheer volume of oil passing through the turbo we advised the best cause of action was to remove the engine to fully check the turbos for damage and to investigate the cause of the concern.

⚙️ With the turbos giving the all clear, we traced and identified the fault to a broken pressure relief valve within the oil filter housing. This was jamming the valve from regulating the pressure and causing the turbos to be fed too much oil.
This was caught just in time- it could have easily been an engine killer!

We’ve been so busy through the summer, a big thanks to all our customers for their patience with bookings and repairs. I’ll also try to keep up regular social updates from now on! 😀
