1 take pass
Twenty-one years ago today,
I passed my manual van driving test at first attempt in Hong Kong with a private instructor.
At that time, I thought I was pretty good.
But if you asked me whether I could actually drive...
I kind of could.
But acrually, I kind of couldn't.
I knew I had to indicate and check around me when turning.
I could do hill starts and turn around on a hill.
I didn't stall the car.
But when I passed my driving test, there were still so many situations I could come across in real-life driving that I simply hadn't learned yet.
I'd never driven faster than 50km/h.
How to change lanes safely?
What does properly checking your mirrors actually mean, and what exactly should you be looking for?
How to reverse park?
How to safely join a motorway using a slip road?
There were so many things I still had to figure out for myself, or pay for extra lessons to learn afterwards.
So I've always had one question:
What does passing your driving test actually mean?
Maybe it means you've become familiar with certain test routes.
Maybe it means you know which specific actions you need to demonstrate during the test.
Or maybe it simply means that on the day, you performed well and successfully met the required standard.
But passing a driving test and being genuinely capable of driving independently are two very different things.
When you're driving independently, you won't always be travelling on familiar roads or routes.
One day, you'll be sitting behind the wheel on your own, driving somewhere you've never been before.
You might come across a road sign you've never seen.
An unfamiliar roundabout.
A complicated multi-lane road.
And cars behind you putting pressure on you.
At that moment, the only thing you can rely on is your own driving ability and judgement.
And that's one of the most important things for learning to drive in the UK.
In the UK, the driving test isn't simply about memorising one fixed test route.
You could be asked to follow road signs to a particular destination.
You could be directed by the examiner to go in different directions.
Or you may need to follow a sat nav as part of your independent driving.
And throughout the learning process, students are exposed to different roads, road conditions and traffic situations.
That's why, for me, the most important goal of learning to drive should never simply be:
"How do I pass my test?"
But should also be:
"Once I've passed, do I have the confidence and ability to drive safely on my own — even with my children in the car?"
