Looking to swap test dates with another learner? The DVSA has amended its guidance on this. From 1 October, learners no longer need to be available at the same time to arrange a test swap. Under the new process, the first learner will need to call DVSA to request the swap. The second learner must then call DVSA on the same working day to confirm that they are happy for the swap to take place.

Parents - it can be daunting taking your child out for a drive when they’re learning but the DVSA tells us that learners are 1.5x more likely to pass if they have extra practice with you. Here are some tips that might help.

- when your child is a passenger, encourage them to think like a driver: call out any hazards; identify road signs and markings - can they do it before you’ve seen them?; predict what other drivers might be about to do

- model good driving yourself: obey the speed limits, avoid coasting, stay calm

- speak to your child’s driving instructor about where to go and what to work on - or even sit in on a lesson

- go through the controls of the car: indicators, windscreen wipers, lights, de-misters, etc. Your child will need to be able to use all the controls competently before they’re ready for their test

- get your child to check the tyre pressures, screen wash, oil, coolant and hydraulic brake fluid - they’ll be asked about one of these on their test

- at the start, pick somewhere like an empty car park or quiet industrial estate where there aren’t hills. Practise finding the biting point when stationary, smooth clutch control, and stopping and starting. Remember to check mirrors and blind spots.

- later, make sure any routes only include junctions and volumes of traffic that your child is confident with. Avoid multi-lane roundabouts and dual carriageways until after they’ve covered these with their instructor.

- keep calm and give clear, early directions

- try to let them think things through - don’t instruct them on absolutely everything. The aim is that they become independent. If you talk the whole time, learners can feel overloaded. If you’re needing to tell them everything, the area you’ve picked is too challenging. Go somewhere quieter.
