Today is National Driving Instructor Day, and I want to talk about what really happens in the passenger seat. ๐๐จ
Most people see a lesson on parallel parking, or working on roundabouts. But for me, being an instructor is about navigating the *invisible passengers* my pupils bring with them:
โจanxiety,
โจself-doubt,
โจand the pressure to succeed.
I take this personally because Iโve been there. Iโve walked the path of anxiety, and struggle with my own mental health. Even as an instructor, I know what itโs like to have your heart race or your mind cloud over when things feel like too much.
Because of my own journey, I know that learning to drive is one of the most vulnerable things a person can do. It requires immense trust. When a student says "I can't do this," I don't just hear a struggle with a manoeuvre โ I hear a reflection of the same weight Iโve carried myself.
To my fellow instructors: thank you for being the calm in the storm. And to my pupils: I see you.
I lead with empathy because I know how much it matters to have someone in your corner who actually gets it.
Teaching isnโt just about the rules of the road - itโs about building the confidence to navigate life, even when the road gets bumpy.
