Buying a Used Power Fold Mirror? Check These First

A power fold mirror that looks right can still be the wrong part, and you won't find out until it's sat on your drive.

Start with the exact listing wording. "Electric/Powerfold" is not the same as "Electric/Heated/Manual Folding." We've got a Vauxhall Crossland X mirror listed as the latter, so it won't fold itself. A Ford Focus Mk3 facelift one lists heated, puddle lamp and powerfold together.

Next, check the side, the model generation (Mk2 versus Mk1) and the part number. Our Peugeot 208 Mk2 left mirror, for example, is 98260232XT.

Then look at the grade. Ours are Grade A, and prices start well below main dealer levels.

Fresh back from the Automotive Recyclers Association (ARA) Convention in Atlanta, USA, we're delighted to share some fantastic news!

Our very own Darren Combellack was presented with an award recognising his Distinguished Service and Loyal Support as a Director of the ARA.

This is a fantastic honour and recognition of Darren's continued commitment and contribution to the automotive recycling industry, both here in the UK and internationally.

The convention was another brilliant opportunity to connect with industry colleagues from around the world, share knowledge, explore new ideas and strengthen relationships.

At Combellacks, we're incredibly proud to be part of an industry that continues to develop and innovate, and even prouder to see Darren's contribution recognised on an international stage.

Blind spot radar sensors: can you buy one used?

A blind spot radar sensor costs a fortune new, but you can find Grade A used ones for a fraction of that.

These sensors sit behind the rear bumper and watch the lanes beside you. When they fail, that warning light on your mirror goes dead. Right now we've got a Jaguar I-PACE rear left blind spot radar (part J9D314D453AG) listed at £30.00, plus a SsangYong Musso radar sensor at £48.00 and a Suzuki Vitara auto braking radar sensor at £120.00.

Match the part number printed on your old unit before you buy. Radar sensors are fussy, and the same car can use different numbers depending on trim and year.

We've over 1,150 vehicles being broken at the moment, so not every part is listed online. If you can't see yours, it may still be on a car in the yard. Which sensor are you trying to track down?

Used Door Lock Assemblies: Finding the Right One

A door lock that won't latch or won't unlock doesn't have to mean a main dealer bill. We have 3,904 door lock assemblies in stock, and Grade A examples start at £18.

Spec matters more than make. A Golf Mk7 rear left with deadlocks (5K4839015AE) is £18. A Focus Mk3 left rear with child lock and dead locks is £24. A Range Rover L405 left rear with passive keyless entry and double locking (LR078750) is £48.

Those extras are why two locks that look identical on the bench aren't interchangeable. Check whether yours has deadlocks, a child lock or keyless entry before you order.

Match the part number on your old lock where you can, and send us your reg if you're unsure about compatibility. Which car are you trying to sort out at the moment?

Volvo owner? Used OEM parts save real money

Main dealer prices for Volvo parts can be brutal. That's why so many XC60 and V40 owners come to us instead.

Right now we've got a Volvo XC60 Mk2 rear right outer door handle in stock, Grade A condition, at £138. We've also got an XC60 Mk2 right airbag at £42. Both are genuine OEM, tested and graded before they go on the shelf.

Grade A means the part's in excellent condition, fully functional, ready to fit. No guesswork on quality.

We're also auctioning a 2017 Volvo V40 T2 R-Design Pro this Sunday at 7pm, currently at £1,300, if you're after a project or a parts donor.

Buying a used AC compressor? Check this first

A used air con compressor can save you real money over a main dealer part, but only if it's the right one for your car.

Compressors vary by engine code, not just model. We've got Vauxhall Astra Mk7 diesel compressors and Citroën C3 petrol units both listed separately by engine variant, because a mismatch means the fitting won't work properly.

Check the part number against your old unit before you order. It only takes a minute and it saves a return trip.

Ask whether the compressor has been tested for seizure or seal wear. Grade A means it's been assessed and graded, not just pulled off a scrap car and boxed up.

Also worth asking: has the receiver drier or expansion valve been replaced recently? A tired compressor often takes those parts down with it.

Used brake calipers: what to check before buying

Brake calipers take a battering, so it's fair to ask whether a used one is worth fitting. Short answer: yes, if it's graded and checked properly.

Every caliper we sell is Grade A, meaning it's been inspected for cracks, corrosion, and piston movement before it goes anywhere near our catalogue. That's the difference between salvage done properly and just pulling a part off a shelf.

When you're looking at a used caliper, check these things:

The piston should move freely with no seizing or pitting.
Look for fluid leaks around the seals.
Check the bracket and mounting points for corrosion or damage.

We've currently got a Jaguar F-Type front caliper in stock at £300, a fraction of the main dealer price for the same OEM part. With over 1,150 vehicles being broken right now, there's usually a good match sitting on our shelves already.

Heater not working? Might not need a new car

No heat blowing through on cold mornings usually means the heater motor assembly has packed up, not the whole climate system.

That's the fan unit that pushes warm air through your vents. Replace it new through a dealer and you're often looking at serious money, especially on newer models.

Buying a used one is a genuinely sensible option here. We currently stock heater motor/assembly units for makes like Ford and Citroen, and prices vary a lot depending on the vehicle. A Ford Tourneo Connect one is listed at £72, for example, while some fit more premium models and cost more.

We grade every part before it goes online, so you know what condition it's in before you buy, not after.

Worth checking your part number against your logbook before you order, that alone saves a lot of return hassle. Anyone had a heater motor go on them right as the cold weather set in?
