If you think your car may need a DPF clean? Read on ......

Check out this diary of a fellow TerraClean technician;

80% of the DPF faults attended this week did not need a DPF clean.

100% of DPF problems this week had an underlying issue causing the DPF fault. We identified every one of them correctly, first time.

Professional technicians such as those in the TerraClean network start with their own diagnostics before committing to cost of repair or confirming a need to clean.

The list of 10 for this week....

Mondeo 2.0tdci Required a Thermostat & Regeneration (self clean)
Transit 2.2tdci. Required an Exhaust temp sensor & a DPF Clean
Golf 2.0tdi. Required an inlet manifold and a DPF Clean
Astra 2.0cdti. Requires Glow Plugs & a software update
Merc C220d. Required air filter and software update & regeneration
Mondeo 2.0tdci. Required DPF pressure sensor pipes fitting the correct way after another garage replaced them incorrectly.
Golf 1.6tdi. Required a forced driven regeneration as owner had ignored DPF light.
S Max 2.2. Requires a fuel Vaporiser
Honda CRV Requires a Diesel Oxidising Catalyst
Mondeo 2.2tdci. Required a fuel Vaporiser and a driven regeneration

10 vehicles with DPF faults, where owners had asked about having them cleaned.

2 (only) were cleaned
9 needed other work &
1 needed the driver advising of what they should do when the warning light comes on.

Other companies may well have carried out the requested cleans & not addressed the causes of the problems. A cleaned DPF may block again quickly, if the cause of the blockage is not addressed.

If you’re experiencing DPF problems, or any problems with your vehicle and want accurate and conclusive diagnosis, get in touch.

If somebody says they can do the job "cheaper" be sure they can do it right, so it only needs to be done once.

We are your local TerraClean technicians and have the knowledge and experience & support of a 500+ strong network of fellow technicians, to sort your problems out. A network with a reputation for quality.

🔵DPF Removal Don’t be that guy🔵

❌Removal's not a legal option❌

It’s sometimes suggested that you can get a DPF cut out of the exhaust and the engine management software reprogrammed rather than pay to get it repaired.

DPFs are fitted to meet European emissions regulations and it would be an offence to use a vehicle which has been modified in such a way that it no longer complies with the emissions standards it was designed to meet.

Removing a DPF could also invalidate any insurance cover because it makes the vehicle illegal for road use.

A missing DPF, where one was fitted when the vehicle was built, will result in an MOT failure.

It is not illegal currently to offer the services of DPF removal, however it is illegal to drive with it removed. So the next time someone says rip it out, stop and think?

A DPF is a serviceable item, like most parts on a car, from time to time they need to be maintained and at TerraClean we have cleaning options available depending on make, model, mileage we can offer an in situ clean or an off the vehicle clean, either method helps to keep the DPF in healthy operation, and on the vehicle where it belongs.

Do you store your motorcycle over the winter?

Are you ready to get it back on the road, or have you done so already?

Is it running as well as you remember? or not.....

If you can feel the bike is not running as well as usual it is possibly due to the build up of contaminants in the fuel system, during the time it was not being used.

Simple answer, get a and get the best from your motorbike this summer.

We are your local centre so just make contact and we will explain the rest.

Enjoy your motorcycle and stay safe too.

A record number of vehicles failed their MOT test last year due to faults relating to exhaust emissions, new data suggests.

A Freedom of Information (FOI) request to the DVSA - by Bookmygarage.com - found more cars have failed on emissions in the past two years than any other before it.

Diesel vehicles have seen the greatest surge in failures due to emissions, with a rise of 240% compared to just 37% for petrol vehicles.

In May 2018, the government introduced tougher MOT regulations to clamp down on vehicles producing excessive emissions which led to a significant rise in failures of more than 70%.

Jessica Potts, head of marketing at BookMyGarage.com, said: “The regulations have mostly impacted diesel cars, causing more than triple the number to fail, compared to petrol car failures which have only increased by a third.”

The large increase in diesel failures was caused by a change to rules for cars equipped with a diesel particulate filter (DPF). Any car equipped with a DPF will fail an MOT if there is either evidence it has been tampered with or if smoke of any colour can be seen coming from the exhaust.

DPFs became standard on all diesel cars in 2009 to comply with Euro 5 emissions standards, though a few cars older than this may also be equipped with a DPF. Its purpose is to trap soot particles from exhaust emissions which are toxic to humans.

DVSA also introduced new fault categories, with ‘Major’ or ‘Dangerous’ faults resulting in a failed test.

Almost all petrol emissions failures were classed as ‘Major’ last year. By comparison, around 5% of all diesel emissions failures were classed as ‘Dangerous’, meaning the car should not be driven until the fault is rectified.

Potts said: “Since the Volkswagen ‘dieselgate’ scandal in 2015, diesel cars have earned a bad reputation for producing harmful exhaust emissions.”

According to the SMMT, the market share of diesel cars accounted for just 16% of new car sales last year. In 2015, about 50% of new cars sold were diesel.

“That’s not to say all diesels are bad,” continued Potts. “The latest diesel cars are equipped with emissions control systems such as particulate filters and selective catalytic reduction (AdBlue) to reduce or eliminate harmful emissions.

“What this data tells us though, is that an increasing number of relatively modern diesels are struggling to pass the MOT test as their emissions control systems face tougher scrutiny. It’s important these systems function correctly to protect the environment but putting them right can also cost owners thousands of pounds.”

Although diesels have seen a much larger failure rate increase in recent years, petrol cars are actually still more likely to fail, with 4.5% of the total number licenced failing annually due to emissions, compared to 3.3% for diesels.
