Happy New Year, I hope 2026 is a safe one for you all.
Anyone who learned to drive before 4th of June 2018 will not have been able to legally drive on motorways as part of their lessons. It seems that despite it now being legal for driving instructors to take learners on motorways in dual control cars, there are still significant numbers of learners passing their tests without having ever been near a motorway.
All learners with Richard Martin driver training will have had at least one experience of Driving 50+ miles on dual carriageways and motorways with speed limits of 70mph before they take their driving test. The majority of our pupils once they have passed their test also elect to take an extended motorway training session of over three hours, driving over 100 miles the majority of which is on the motorway system.
The video linked below, produced by a serving roads policing officer, gives some idea of the information we cover on these sessions.
It is very useful to watch this before you carry out your post test motorway training but other more experienced drivers that have never received formal motorway training may well benefit from watching it.
