Myth vs. Fact: Do I really need to check my tyres if the TPMS light isn't on?

MYTH! Your car’s Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is a brilliant safety feature, but it usually only alerts you when a tyre has lost around 20-25% of its pressure.

On wet autumn roads covered in slippery leaves, even a minor drop in pressure or worn tread depth can drastically increase your stopping distance!

Quick Tip: Grab a 20p coin and insert it into the main tread grooves of your tyres. If the outer band of the coin is hidden, your tread is above the legal 1.6mm limit.

September is historically the single busiest month of the year for UK MOT renewals, which means a lot of drivers who had tests due late last month or early this October are running close to their expiration dates.

Here is how to keep your vehicle legal and road ready without any hassle this month.

Check Your Due Date:
Search your vehicle’s registration online via the GOV.UK MOT status tool to see your exact expiration date. You can book an MOT up to a month minus a day before it expires and still keep your same renewal date for next year.

Pre MOT Quick Checks:
- Wipers & Screenwash: Top up your fluid and make sure the wiper blades don't leave streaks.
- Lights & Indicators: Have someone walk around the car while you check headlights, brake lights and indicators.
- Tyre Tread: Check that tread depth is well above the legal minimum of 1.6mm across the central three quarters.
