James is already a full licence holder, so there was no requirement whatsoever for him to have any further training. But having never had the opportunity to drive on a motorway while learning, he decided he wanted to build his experience properly before tackling them on his own.

And he certainly got plenty of experience today! πŸš—πŸ’¨

We headed up the M56 towards Runcorn, across the Mersey Gateway, then towards the M57 and Formby, using road signs, markings and the sat nav to navigate some increasingly busy and complex roads.

At one point James found himself in the left lane when he needed to be in the right. Rather than making a last-second move across lanes, he did exactly the right thing. He stayed safe, followed the lane he was already committed to and then found a safe opportunity to turn around. πŸ‘πŸ»

You won't always be in the perfect lane. You won't always get every junction right. What matters is knowing how to deal with it safely.

After a quick pit stop and snack at the rather unusual-looking McDonald's at Formby Business Park πŸ”πŸ˜‚, we headed back via a completely different route.

This time we went through Liverpool city centre, through the Wallasey Tunnel and onto the M53, following it all the way back towards North Wales and onto the A*5.

There were a few questionable decisions from other drivers along the way too, but that's motorway driving. πŸ‘€

Good driving isn't about assuming everyone else will do the right thing. It's about anticipating what might happen, leaving yourself options and being ready to react safely.

And that's exactly what today was about.

No test.
No pressure.
No certificate at the end.

Just building experience, confidence and independence. πŸ’ͺ🏻
