Spring into Action: Essential Car Care Tips for March : Introduction:

As the days get longer and the weather starts to warm up, March is the perfect time to give your car some extra attention. At Morley Auto Services, we know that a little maintenance now can save you time, money, and stress later. Here’s our guide to keeping your vehicle in top shape this spring.

1. Check Your Tyres

Winter can be tough on tyres. As we head into spring, it’s important to:
- Inspect tread depth – The legal minimum is 1.6mm, but we recommend a minimum of 3mm depth.
- Look for cracks or bulges – These can be signs of wear or damage.
- Check tyre pressure – Correct pressure improves fuel efficiency and handling.

2. Test Your Battery

Cold weather can weaken your car battery. Before summer arrives:
- Check for corrosion on the terminals.
- Test the battery’s charge - if it’s struggling, it might be time for a replacement.
- Listen for slow cranking when you start your car.

3. Top Up Your Fluids

Fluids are the lifeblood of your car. Make sure to:
- Check engine oil – Low or dirty oil can cause serious damage.
- Top up coolant – Essential for preventing overheating as temperatures rise.
- Refill windscreen washer fluid – Spring showers and pollen mean you’ll need it!

4. Spring Clean Your Car

A thorough clean isn’t just about looks—it can also protect your car:
- Wash away road salt to prevent rust.
- Clean the interior to remove allergens and keep your car fresh.
- Check your wipers – Replace them if they’re streaking or squeaking.

5. Book Your MOT

If your MOT is due, don’t leave it until the last minute. March is a great time to get it done and avoid the summer rush. At Morley Auto Services, we offer:
- Friendly, honest advice
- Competitive pricing
- Convenient appointments

Spring is all about renewal, and that includes your car. By following these simple tips, you’ll ensure your vehicle is safe, efficient, and ready for the months ahead. If you need any help or advice, the team at Morley Auto Services is here for you.

Call us today to schedule your spring service!

What Engine Oil Does in Cold Weather – and why it really matters: When temperatures drop, you may worry about icy roads and having to scrape a frozen wind screen, however, your engine oil also feels the cold.

Morley Auto Services see more cold-related engine problems than you might expect and many of them come down to how oil behaves in winter. To prevent these issues, you need to make sure your oil is in good condition to allow smooth, reliable running.

Cold weather thickens your oil, changing its viscosity. In warm conditions, oil flows easily but when it’s cold, it thickens like honey. This matters because your oil pump has to push the thicker oil around the engine. The colder it is, the harder the pump has to work. This change means;

* Your oil is slower to lubricate the engine on startup

* There’s more friction between engine parts

* Higher wear and tear

* Increased strain on the battery and starter motor

This is why winter breakdowns are so common.

Most engine wear happens in the first few seconds after starting the car, before the oil has warmed up and circulated properly. Without fast-moving oil, key components have less protection. Over time, this can lead to reduced performance, noisy running, and the need for repairs.

Modern oils are designed for UK winters, but the oil needs to be changed in time.

Oils are engineered to cope with a wide range of temperatures, which is where multi-grade ratings come in, but the condition of even the best oil breaks down with use. Old or contaminated oil thickens even more in winter, making cold starts harder and protection weaker, which is why regular oil changes are especially important heading into the colder months.

Book an oil change

At Morley, we use the manufacturer-approved oils for your vehicle and check for issues that are more common in winter. A quick winter service can save you a lot of hassle and prevent expensive engine problems down the road. Cold weather affects every part of your vehicle, but engine oil plays one of the most important roles in keeping everything running smoothly.

If you’re unsure whether your oil is winter-ready, give us a call we’re always happy to help keep you safely on the road this winter.

When temperatures drop, you may worry about icy roads and having to scrape a frozen wind screen, however, your engine oil also feels the cold.

Time to Book Your Car's Winter Health Check, MOT or Servicing - Get Ready for Winter: It's that time again.

Temperatures will be dropping soon and days are getting shorter. Now is the perfect time to make sure your car is ready for whatever winter throws your way, and Morley wants to help you stay safe and prepared on the roads. We understand the importance of keeping your car running smoothly and safely, and the best time to get sorted is before temperatures drop and road conditions worsen.

Book your winter check up, MOT or service so we can prepare your car for winter.

Have peace of mind as we head into the frosty, wetter months.

* Battery Health: Cold weather puts extra strain on your car’s battery. If it’s getting on in age, you could be left out in the cold.

* Tyre Grip: Wet, icy, and maybe snowy roads make tyre condition critical. We’ll check tread depth, pressure, and wear.

* Wipers & Washer Fluid: Obviously, visibility is key. Don’t get caught out by streaky wipers or an empty washer bottle.

* Antifreeze & Coolant: These are essential to prevent engine damage during freezing temperatures.

* Lights & Heating: Make sure you can see - and be seen - while staying warm and safe.

Stay safe this winter.

Contact us today to book your winter check up, MOT or service and drive with confidence, whatever the weather brings!

Your Car and Driving in a Heatwave: During a heatwave, your car faces additional stresses from extreme temperatures. Here's a checklist of car maintenance and precautions to help protect your vehicle and avoid breakdowns:

Essential Maintenance

1. Check Coolant Levels

Make sure the radiator is full and the coolant is clean and at the proper mixture.

2. Tyre Pressure

Hot roads can increase tyre pressures; check your tyre pressures before going travelling too far and make sure they are suitable.

3. Air Conditioning System

Ensure it's blowing cold air. If not, consider getting it recharged.

Driving & Usage Tips

Avoid Parking in Direct Sunlight

Use windscreen sunshades or park in a garage/shaded area.

Consider window tints or UV-reflective window films.

25th May 2025 Towel Day - Douglas Adams Birthday : Keeping a towel in your car can be a surprisingly versatile, practical and beneficial thing to do.

Having a towel readily available can help you out in many situations and is a helpful addition to your car's supplies. For simple emergencies to unexpected adventures, Arthur Dent knows all about that!

A towel can be useful for loads of things:

Drying; (Bet you didn’t think of that one!)

Whether it's after a spill, a rain shower, or a trip to the beach, a towel is handy for drying yourself or your passengers.

Warmth:

In case of a breakdown or a sudden drop in temperature, a towel can provide extra warmth for you or small people in the back.

Escape:

If you find yourself stuck on ice or snow with your wheels spinning, placing your trusty towel under your drive wheels will give you grip and an opportunity to escape.

Comfort:

A towel can be used as a cushion or to provide extra comfort either on a rest break or for passengers on long journeys. Who needs to buy a bulky neck pillow? Also as a buffer, separator between fighting children.

Cleaning:

Use your towel for dusting, or other messes that may occur in your car.

Emergency signalling:

In an emergency, a towel can be waved to attract attention or used as a distress signal.

Psychological Value: (May be pushing is a bit here!)

Having a towel can create a sense of preparedness and make you feel more comfortable in unexpected situations.

Other Uses:

You can use it to cover items from theft, or even calm a distressed animal.

In short, a towel in your car is a small, lightweight item that provides a surprising amount of versatility and peace of mind in various situations.

Morley Auto Services recognising World Plumbing Day : Celebrating World Plumbing Day: The Hidden Plumbing of Your Car

Every year on March 11th, we celebrate World Plumbing Day, a time to recognize the essential role plumbing plays in our day to day lives. While we often associate plumbing with household water systems, vehicles also rely on complex plumbing networks to function efficiently. Let’s take a moment to appreciate the unsung hero of automotive engineering—the intricate plumbing systems that keep our cars running smoothly.

The Essential Fluid Systems in a Car

Your car contains several key fluid-based systems that play a crucial role in performance and safety. Let’s take a closer look at how these systems work:

1. Cooling System

The cooling system acts as the vehicle’s temperature regulator. It consists of a radiator, water pump, thermostat, and a network of hoses that circulate coolant (antifreeze mixed with water) to prevent overheating. The radiator acts as a heat exchanger, dissipating excess heat from the engine, while the water pump ensures continuous coolant flow.

2. Fuel System

Your car's fuel system is responsible for delivering petrol or diesel to the engine. It includes the fuel tank, fuel lines, fuel pump, fuel injectors, and a fuel filter. Just like plumbing in a house, the system ensures the smooth and precise flow of fuel, allowing for efficient combustion and engine power.

3. Brake System

The hydraulic brake system relies on brake fluid to transmit force from the brake pedal to the calipers, which clamp onto the rotors to slow or stop the vehicle. The system includes master and slave cylinders, brake lines, and reservoirs, all of which function similarly to household water pressure systems, converting force into movement.

4. Power Steering System

Most modern cars use a hydraulic power steering system, which utilizes pressurized fluid to assist with steering. The system includes a power steering pump, fluid reservoir, and hoses that transfer fluid to help reduce the effort needed to turn the wheel.

5. Transmission Fluid System

Automatic transmissions use fluid to lubricate and cool gears, while also providing hydraulic pressure for smooth gear shifts. Transmission fluid circulates through lines and a cooler, maintaining optimal performance and preventing wear on moving parts.

6. Windshield Washer System

This often-overlooked system consists of a reservoir, pump, and small tubing that delivers washer fluid to the windshield. While it may not be vital to the vehicle’s operation, it pretty much is when in the summer the screen is covered in dust and in winter dirty road spray rescricts your visibility. Without it visibility and safety would be compromised.

Why Car Plumbing Matters on World Plumbing Day

Plumbing isn’t just about household convenience—it’s about safety, efficiency, and sustainability. In cars, properly maintained fluid systems contribute to:

* Vehicle longevity – Keeping systems clean and properly filled reduces wear and tear.

* Environmental protection – Preventing fluid leaks reduces pollution and preserves natural resources.

* Road safety – Well-maintained brake, cooling, and power steering systems ensure optimal performance and accident prevention.

Maintaining Your Car’s Fluid Systems

Just like home plumbing, your car’s fluid systems need regular maintenance either at home or with us at Morley.
Here are some essential check we make:

* Check fluid levels regularly. Monitor oil, coolant, brake fluid, and transmission fluid to prevent leaks and ensure smooth operation.

* Flush and replace fluids as recommended. Over time, fluids degrade and become contaminated, reducing their effectiveness.

* Inspect hoses and connections. Cracked or leaking hoses can lead to performance issues and costly repairs.

* And you can help us by watching for warning signs. If you notice overheating, difficulty steering, sluggish gear shifts, or reduced braking efficiency, have a one of our mechanics inspect your vehicle.

So, the next time you check, or get Morley Auto Services, to check your car’s fluids, give a nod to the hidden plumbing and our wonderful staff who keep it your vehicle running smoothly!

Daylight Saving Time Change - Sunday, March 30, 2025 : Daylight Saving Time Changes

As the clocks spring forward this weekend, UK car drivers will be relieved to see longer daylight hours.

This year, the clocks will go forward on Sunday, March 30, 2025, which means an extra hour of daylight in the evenings, but also a little less sleep on the night before!

More Daylight, More Road Safety

One of the biggest benefits of the clocks going forward is the increase in daylight during the evening hours. More daylight means better visibility for driving, which can help reduce the risk of accidents. The early mornings of course will be darker for a little while until the sun rises earlier as well.

Changing Your Car’s Clocks and Settings

This might sound basic, but it’s often a pain in the neck! So bite the bullet and press those buttons. Or if you didn't adjust it in October you may be about to go back to the correct time in your car so enjoy the next 6 months of having the correct time.

If your car’s infotainment system has an automatic time update feature, it should take care of this for you, but may be worth double-checking.

Schedule Your Vehicle’s Maintenance

With longer daylight hours, now might be the perfect time to schedule that much-needed car maintenance. As we head into the warmer months, ensure your vehicle is in tip-top shape for road trips, summer drives, or just your daily commute. Regular checks on the brakes, tyres, and lights can help you stay safe and avoid any unexpected breakdowns.

If you’re unsure about any specific maintenance needs, feel free to contact us, Morley Auto Services in Redhill, for a thorough check-up.

The daylight saving time change hopefully marks the beginning of longer, sunnier days, Morley Auto Services we're always ready to help you keep your car in top condition throughout the year. Whether it's a quick tyre check, oil change, or a full service, we’re here to make sure your vehicle is safe and road-ready—no matter what time it is!

Stay safe, and enjoy the extra daylight!
