ECU Guru

ECU Guru Specialising in Porsche Rev Range correction and clearing for 986/996 and 987/997 models. This is completely optional.

Porsche models from around 1997 have recorded 'Rev Range Data' that shows how high the engine has been revved and when it most recently occurred. Sometimes the data can become corrupted and this corrupted data is therefore not relevant when assessing if a warranty claim is valid. However, the warranty companies often use the corruption as a handy excuse not to pay for a claim that often has nothin

g to do with an excessive rpm level event. This situation is wrong and we offer a service to put it right by assessing the data and fixing the corruption. Another situation where the rev range data may be 'zeroed' rather than corrected is when a vehicle has had a new engine fitted and the recorded rev range data is no longer valid, even if it isn't corrupt. In this case the operating hours can optionally be zeroed too, to reflect the run time of the new engine rather than that of the old engine. Another case where ECU data may be changed, or transferred, is when an ECU has been replaced. When Porsche, or anyone else for that matter, replaces an ECU they do not (or can not) transfer all of the old ECU data across to the replacement ECU so rev range data, as well as any other vehicle-specific data such as trim spec, colour, gearbox number etc are either missing (in the case of a new replacement) or incorrect (in the case of a used replacement). This situation can cause issues with respect to recorded mileage too, because the running hours and the mileage don't tally (average speed usually being in the 30-35 mph range) in some models the actual vehicle mileage (it's actually recorded in km) is in there too and if that data doesn't tally it looks very suspicious for obvious reasons. We can offer a complete 'ECU Clone' solution for when your ECU needs replacement or if you want an ECU to have in your 'spares package' for your track/race car etc.

We can now offer rev range and time-stamp correction via OBD in the car or on the bench without opening the ECU on 987.1 Boxster/Cayman and 997.1 ME7.8 ECUs, including Turbo, GT2 and GT3.

This more efficient method means that we can now fix rev range problems for a reduced price of £300+vat.

986 and 996 OBD solution is in development.

We got a little mention in 911&Porsche World Magazine last month. The funny thing is the last sentence; it's been well known for some time that rev range data cannot be relied upon to be accurate, so the real moral of the story here is whether it's morally right for a warranty company to reject a valid claim based upon data that's so commonly known to be incorrect? We hope to run a feature soon showing different ways that the data can become corrupt, and how to spot when it is.
