🚨 THE MORE WE TOOK APART… THE MORE WE WONDERED WHAT THE HELL HAD GONE ON HERE 🤦♂️🔧😂 🚨
Snapped bolts. Missing bolts. Unplugged components. Oil leaks. Enough instant gasket to ice a birthday cake… and every time we thought we’d found the final bodge, another one appeared. 👀
This 2007 Vauxhall Corsa came into ASR after having a considerable amount of previous repair work carried out elsewhere.
What started as an investigation quickly turned into:
“Right… what the f**k are we going to find next?” 😂
By the end of it, we didn’t need another technician.
We needed Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy and Scooby.
Because apparently we’d been booked to investigate The Mystery of the Missing Mechanic. 👻🔧😂
And unfortunately, every time we pulled the mask off one problem…
There was another bloody bodge underneath it.
🔧 FIRST MYSTERY — THE ROCKER COVER
The customer had previously been told there was an oil leak causing oil to fill the spark plug holes.
Fair enough — there certainly was oil where it shouldn’t have been.
But apparently nobody thought it was worth mentioning the tiny detail that…
FOUR BOLTS HAD BEEN SNAPPED.
One snapped bolt?
It happens.
Two?
You’re having a bad day.
FOUR?!
At that point we’re starting to think the torque specification being used was:
“Keep tightening until it suddenly becomes easier.” 😂
And apparently when that happened four times nobody thought:
“Zoinks… perhaps we should stop doing that.” 😭😂
If the rocker cover can’t be secured correctly, you’ve got a pretty good clue why it might not be sealing.
Velma wouldn’t even have needed to find her glasses for that one. 👓😂
Jinkies! We’ve solved the oil leak!
Unfortunately, instead of correctly dealing with the broken fixings…
They were left behind for somebody else to discover.
We even had to extract a previously broken rocker-cover bolt during our investigation.
Maybe the plan was to leave enough clues behind for us to solve the mystery ourselves. 🕵️♂️😂
🔧 THEN WE GOT TO THE SUMP…
Ohhhh, the sump.
The pièce de résistance. 🎂😂
There was so much instant gasket on this thing it looked like the previous repairer had stopped being a mechanic halfway through the job and started icing a birthday cake.
If the instructions said:
“Apply a thin continuous bead…”
Somebody apparently read:
“Get the piping bag out, Shaggy — we’re going f**king decorating.” 🎂😂
But WAIT.
Because this is where the episode takes a plot twist.
THE SUMP CAME WITH AN ACTUAL GASKET.
Yes.
A proper gasket.
Sitting there.
Designed specifically to…
SEAL. THE. SUMP. 🤦♂️
So why someone looked at a perfectly good supplied gasket and thought:
“Nah, this needs half a tube of instant gasket as well”
is beyond us.
At this point they must have been genuinely more confused than Scooby-Doo trying to work out who was underneath the mask. 😂
We can just picture it:
“Ruh-roh… Raggy… there’s a rasket in the box!”
Previous repairer:
“IGNORE IT. GET THE PIPING BAG.” 🎂😂😂
And just to put the cherry on top of our beautifully iced engine?
A sump bolt was missing/snapped as well.
Of course it was.
At this stage we’d have been more surprised if all the bolts were actually present.
🔧 THEN… ANOTHER SNAPPED BOLT IN THE CYLINDER HEAD
Yep.
ANOTHER ONE.
Honestly, bolts were dropping faster than characters in a Scooby-Doo corridor chase. 😂
At this stage finding an intact fixing felt like we’d discovered a Scooby Snack.
The previous repairer wasn’t removing and refitting bolts…
They were collecting casualties.
And before anyone says it — yes, mechanics snap bolts.
We do.
Every mechanic does eventually.
Old cars fight back.
Bolts seize.
Threads corrode.
Things go wrong.
But normally when you snap one…
YOU FIX IT.
You don’t leave it there like a clue and wait for the Mystery Inc. van to arrive six months later. 😂
🔌 THEN WE FOUND THE AIR-CON CONDENSER CONNECTION…
This one might be our favourite.
The electrical connection for the air-conditioning condenser hadn’t been plugged in.
Why?
With everything assembled as it had been left, the connector wouldn’t correctly reach/fit into position.
Now this is normally the point where a mechanic thinks:
“Hang on. Something isn’t fitted correctly.”
You stop.
You investigate.
You work out why.
You correct it.
But apparently our mystery mechanic had another diagnostic procedure:
“Doesn’t reach? F**k it, don’t plug it in.” 🤷♂️😂
Problem solved!
Can’t have a poor electrical connection if you simply…
DON’T HAVE AN ELECTRICAL CONNECTION. 🧠💡
Even Shaggy would’ve looked at Scooby and gone:
“Like… dude… I think that plug is supposed to go somewhere.” 😂😂
🔌 AND IT WASN’T THE ONLY THING LEFT UNPLUGGED…
Further electrical connections hadn’t been correctly reconnected following previous work.
At this point we’re assuming the final quality-control checklist looked something like:
✅ Engine still there
✅ Four wheels present
✅ Most of the bolts accounted for
✅ Wiring looks complicated — leave it
✅ Shut bonnet
✅ Collect payment
✅ RUN BEFORE THEY PULL THE MASK OFF
😂😂😂
🔊 AND THEN THERE WERE THE SPEAKERS…
The customer had also been led to believe there was an issue with the speakers and that replacements were required.
So we investigated.
Now prepare yourselves for some extremely advanced automotive electrical diagnostics.
We checked the speakers.
And discovered…
🥁🥁🥁
THEY WERE FU***NG UNPLUGGED. 😂😂😂
Turns out speakers have this really inconvenient design flaw where they generally need to be connected to something before they’ll make any sound.
Who knew? 🤷♂️
No replacement speakers.
No complicated wiring repair.
No supernatural forces.
Just plug the bloody things back in.
Velma solves another one:
“It wasn’t a faulty speaker at all!”
Pulls mask off.
“IT WAS AN UNPLUGGED CONNECTOR!”
😱😂😂
And the customer would’ve gotten away without buying speakers too…
if it wasn’t for those meddling mechanics at ASR. 🐕😂
💷 THEN WE STARTED HEARING ABOUT SOME OF THE PREVIOUS BILLS…
And this is where the funny side starts disappearing.
The owner is a young, new driver who has already spent a considerable amount of money having this car worked on.
One example that certainly made us raise an eyebrow…
A SECOND-HAND bonnet for a 2007 Vauxhall Corsa: £190.
Then…
£100 TO FIT IT.
That’s £290 supplied and fitted for a used bonnet.
We’ll let everyone make their own minds up about that one. 👀
Even Scooby would’ve spat his Scooby Snack out when that invoice landed. 😳😂
But genuinely, this is the part we don’t find funny.
A young new driver shouldn’t need to understand parts prices, labour times and mechanical procedures just to know whether they’re being treated fairly.
That’s why they’re paying someone who supposedly does.
⚠️ JOKES ASIDE, THERE’S A SERIOUS POINT TO THIS POST.
Cars fight back.
Bolts seize.
Bolts snap.
Threads strip.
Parts fail.
And we’ve had plenty of jobs that should take an hour turn into absolute nightmares.
That’s the motor trade.
The important part is what happens next.
If you snap something — deal with it.
If you make a mistake — own it.
If something doesn’t fit — find out why.
If you discover another problem — tell the customer.
And if an electrical component isn’t working…
Before condemning it, perhaps try the highly advanced diagnostic procedure known throughout the industry as:
PLUGGING THE FU***NG THING IN. 😂
What you DON’T do is leave a trail of snapped bolts like Scooby Snacks leading back to the Mystery Machine…
Cover a sump that ALREADY HAS ITS OWN GASKET in enough instant gasket to win Cake of the Week… 🎂
Leave electrical components disconnected because the plugs don’t reach…
Tell the customer components need replacing when they’re simply unplugged…
Then send the car on its way for somebody else to unravel.
Everything we’ve found on this vehicle has been photographed and documented in our inspection report.
Unfortunately, we’re seeing this kind of thing more and more recently.
Customers are coming to us after spending hundreds — sometimes thousands — elsewhere, only for us to discover poor workmanship, unfinished repairs, incorrect diagnoses or problems caused during previous work.
And underneath all the jokes…
It’s actually really sad.
People work bloody hard for their money.
Most customers aren’t mechanics.
They shouldn’t have to be.
When somebody hands over their keys, they’re trusting the person working on their vehicle to know what they’re doing and treat them fairly.
That trust shouldn’t be abused — whether they’re a young new driver with their first car or somebody who’s been driving for 40 years.
Thankfully…
When the smoke clears…
When the mask finally comes off…
And when you discover the scary monster was actually four snapped bolts, an unplugged condenser, disconnected speakers and a man armed with a tube of instant gasket…
ASR IS HERE WHEN IT ALL GOES T**S UP. 😂🔧
We’ll investigate it.
We’ll photograph it.
We’ll document it.
We’ll explain exactly what we’ve found.
And we’ll work out what actually needs fixing rather than firing the parts cannon at it.
No hiding mistakes.
No “that’ll do.”
No mysterious unplugged components.
No disappearing bolts.
And absolutely…
NO PIPING BAGS ALLOWED NEAR THE FU***NG SUMP. 🎂😂
