⚙️ 1.0 EcoBoost Rebuild – Ford Transit Custom PHEV 🔧

This customers Transit Custom PHEV came to us after having a newly “reconditioned” engine purchased online. Unfortunately, it hadn’t covered many miles before it was recovered to us with engine problems.

Once we stripped the engine down, it didn’t take long to find the cause.

The exhaust cam timing was 90 degrees out, resulting in damaged valves and valve guides. Thankfully — and very luckily — there was no damage to the pistons.

What surprised us even more was the condition of this supposedly “reconditioned” engine.

We found mismatched valves, 8 long valve springs and 4 short ones, double O-rings fitted in the thermostat, along with several other examples of poor workmanship. Not what you expect to find inside a freshly rebuilt engine.

We completely checked and measured the bottom end before turning our attention to the cylinder head and rebuilding it properly, using Ford parts throughout.

The engine is now correctly timed, fully assembled and ready to go back into the van.

A good reminder that when it comes to reconditioned engines, the quality of the rebuild matters just as much as the parts being replaced.

Some of you from the forums may remember this particular Transit Custom, whose owner had some unfortunate luck while travelling on the motorway last week.

The owner, Alex, contacted us and, after a brief chat, trusted us to get his van repaired and back on the road. It arrived with us in a rather sorry state, but thankfully it was nothing we couldn’t sort.

A combination of good used stock items and some new parts kept the repair sensible and cost-effective, and before long Alex was back on the road, detailing and valeting vehicles across the South Coast.

🔧 Ford Ranger – Head Gasket Failure ❌

We recently had this Ford Ranger 3.2 in with us after the cooling system began pressurising.

Diagnosis quickly confirmed a failed head gasket, which was blowing between all cylinders. The failure was significant enough that the waterways had become heavily contaminated with carbon build-up. 👀 See the video in the comments!

With the truck stripped down, the cylinder head was removed and sent away for pressure testing and machining, while everything else was thoroughly cleaned, inspected and prepared ready for reassembly.

The Ranger was then rebuilt using genuine Ford parts, before being fully tested to make sure everything was operating exactly as it should.
