Motorcycle Licensing review

MAG has been campaigning for a review of motorcycle licensing for years. Not minor adjustments, but a proper, evidence-based review. The good news is that the government is now consulting on motorcycle training, testing and licensing. (The closing date is 11th May).

The current system costs too much, traps too many riders on provisional certificates (around 200,000 riders stuck on CBT), and has resulted in a six-year age gap between getting a car or m/c full license. The current system of tier restrictions has been in place for twelve years, with no evidence that it works; and it’s a system that has never been asked to justify itself from first principles.

If you’re coming to this fresh – here’s a short version of MAG’s case for fundamental change Motorcycle licensing https://mag-uk.org/11th-may-the-last-chance-to-have-your-say-on-motorcycle-licensing/

MAG’s proposal for a new system is called URUL — the Universal Road User Licence. One rigorous foundation test for every road user. Training for your specific vehicle. Full licence on completion. No tiers. No renewal treadmill. A level playing field between motorcycles and cars. A Better Road for Everyone lays out the full URUL framework — what we’re asking for, why, and what it would mean for riders. https://mag-uk.org/universal-road-user-licence/

Please read MAG’s proposal, and if that resonates with you, please feel free to share – and importantly, please respond to the government’s consultation. The closing date is 11th May
