🚨 HGV drivers arrested during Christmas drink and drug drive campaign in Wales 🚛🍺💊
HGV drivers across Wales have been arrested as part of the police’s annual Christmas drink and drug drive campaign.
🚓 One driver, Olegs Markusonoks, was arrested after being stopped on the A*5 near Bodelwyddan following a report from a concerned member of the public.
🧪 The 57-year-old failed a roadside breath test, was taken into custody and later charged with drink driving.
⚖️ He appeared before Llandudno Magistrates’ Court, pleaded guilty and was: 🚫 Disqualified from driving for 12 months
💷 Fined £500
📄 Ordered to pay £85 in costs and a £200 victim surcharge
🚔 North Wales Police also confirmed another HGV driver has been charged and will appear at Caernarfon Magistrates’ Court next month.
📍 The 34-year-old was arrested on 10 December near Rhosneigr on Anglesey after failing a roadside breath test.
📊 Since the campaign began on 1 December, almost 100 arrests have been made: 🍺 36 for drink driving
💊 61 for drug driving
📈 There has been a 25% increase in roadside co***ne positives and a 117% rise in drug drive arrests compared with the same period last year.
🗓️ Most drug drive arrests occurred on Mondays, Tuesdays and Sundays, while drink drive arrests were highest on Saturdays and Sundays.
👮 Sergeant Emma Birrell from the roads crime unit said officers take a zero-tolerance approach year-round, with increased patrols throughout December. Operations across multiple locations also uncovered offences including no licence, no insurance, no MOT and mobile phone use.
