We’ve had the pleasure to work on numerous MK1 golfs now as you may have seen, we’ve done them all. GTI campaigns, series 1, mk1 vans, 2 75 swallowtails but this is one of the rarest and earliest left. This 1974 swallowtail has been an ongoing restoration for the past year. Now it is finished with us and handed back to the client I will share the process. It came in for some minor welding jobs and to be stripped down and have an underneath refresh. The shell was in great condition, but a smooth engine bay was started, so brackets and the battery tray had been removed. The goal is to make it look as factory fresh as possible, to preserve its history and rarity.

1980s Ferrari Mondial exhaust muffler panel. The customer asked if we could repair this rare panel as it had started to rot out and had some damage. All rot cut out and fresh metal welded In, new fixings fitted and louvres straightened out. Handed back to the customer to finish off and fit.

The underneath is now finished on the MK1 Caddy build. After everything that has happened, it’s great to finally see it going In the right direction. The customer had a few colours that were possibilities, but I think this is the one thats going to make this show car stand out from the rest.

O/S MK1 caddy inner sill/ floor panel edges replaced with new sections, all surfaces primed, protected and welded in. It is now better than when it left the factory and will protect it from and future corrosion. Inner strengthener and outer sill next.

The O/S outer sill has been removed on the MK1 caddy to see the extent of trapped acid and rust inside and no surprise it has rust between every seam and layer. So it all has to be cut out and replaced with new sections and panels to ensure it’s all removed.

Progress is underway on the mk1 caddy build. We found that acid has been trapped in the rear gearbox mount and started to eat its way through. All chemicals/ rust cut out and replaced with a new fabricated mount.

So that’s us finished with the VW T25. The New pop top kit fitted, finalised and handed back to the customer to enjoy camping again. What a difference this roof has made to the van. This is now another service we can offer.
