Thank you to the lady who took her time to call me on Wednesday and leave a message about when it is appropriate to put my headlights on when driving. Alot of people would take this as critisim but it got me thinking as to when is it appropriate to pop the lights on. As far as I was concerned, yes it was a showery day, but visibility was good, we were in an urban area doing slow speeds and my daytime running lights were on. So when is a good time to put your lights on during the day?

Rule 115 Highway Code: " You should also - use dipped headlights or dim-dip if fitted, at night in built up areas and in dull daytime weather, to ensure that you can be seen.

Rule 226 Highway Code: "You MUST use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, generally when you cannot see for more than 100 meters (328 Feet). You may use front or rear fog lights but you must switch them off when visibilty improves."

So as you can see its a little open to opinion as to when to switch them on with rule 115. How do you define dull? But you as the driver need to be able to judge when it is going to help other road users and help you to be seen.

Always learning :)
