The Ford Ranger has just gone properly heavy duty. 👀
Ford has now confirmed that the new Ranger Super Duty is coming to the UK, and this isn’t just another trim level with a few tougher-looking extras.
It’s been engineered for businesses and specialist operators that need considerably more capability than a conventional one-tonne pickup.
Some of the headline figures:
🔹 Payload of close to 2 tonnes
🔹 Towing capacity of up to 4.5 tonnes
🔹 Gross combined mass of up to 8 tonnes
🔹 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel
🔹 130-litre fuel tank
🔹 Almost 300mm ground clearance
🔹 850mm wading depth
Underneath, Ford has strengthened the chassis, suspension and driveshafts, fitted the strongest rear axle ever used on a Ranger, added an eight-stud wheel setup and increased underbody protection. It also gets electronically locking front and rear differentials and a two-speed transfer case.
There’s some clever tech for businesses too, including Onboard Scales, Smart Hitch and Pro Trailer Backup Assist, along with six pre-wired auxiliary switches to make specialist conversions easier.
One important point for UK operators: this is expected to sit at around 4.5 tonnes GVW, meaning it moves beyond the usual 3.5-tonne commercial vehicle threshold. A Category C1 licence is therefore expected to be required, with operator licensing, tachograph and driver-hours rules potentially becoming relevant depending on how it’s used.
So this probably isn’t the Ranger for the school run.
But for utilities, construction, forestry, emergency services and businesses that genuinely need serious towing and payload capability, it could be a very interesting addition to the UK market.
Would you choose one of these over a conventional Ranger?
