Not every classic needs a full restoration... but every classic deserves a future.

This 1995 Volkswagen Corrado VR6 came to us with a simple brief from its owner: assess the car and turn it into a reliable, usable classic that could be enjoyed for many years to come.

Following a thorough inspection, we put together a programme of work that focused on preserving the car rather than restoring every cosmetic detail. The aim wasn't to create a concours showpiece – it was to build a Corrado that could be driven with confidence, knowing the important jobs had been done properly.

Over the following months we:

πŸ”§ Removed the engine and gearbox to replace the timing chains, fitted a full engine gasket set, renewed leaking seals and switches, replaced the oil pump and refreshed the cooling system to ensure long-term reliability.

βš™οΈ While the engine was out, it became clear the gearbox, despite having previously been rebuilt, was suffering from numerous oil leaks. Rather than cutting corners, it was stripped and professionally rebuilt again with new bearings and seals before being refitted with a new clutch.

πŸ› οΈ Carried out structural welding repairs to the front floors, inner sill, both outer sills, lower front wings and corrected previous poor-quality repairs, before preparing and refinishing the repaired areas.

πŸ›‘οΈ Completed a full underbody corrosion treatment using our mechanical preparation process, WΓΌrth Rust Inhibitor and WΓΌrth Underbody Wax to help protect the underside for years to come.

πŸš— Diagnosed and repaired persistent ABS faults, renewed cooling system components, fitted a new radiator, alternator, secondary water pump, ABS sensors and numerous other parts, before carrying out wheel alignment and extensive road testing.

✨ Finally, the Corrado received a full machine polish, interior valet, a tank of fuel and was presented for its MOT.

The result is exactly what the customer asked for - not a full body restoration, but a thoroughly sorted, dependable Corrado that can be driven and enjoyed with confidence. Better still, it left us with a fresh MOT and not a single advisory.

Projects like this are some of our favourites. They aren't about chasing perfection; they're about making sure these increasingly rare modern classics remain on the road, doing what they were built to do.

Drive them. Enjoy them. Preserve them.

How long have you owned your car? πŸš—

We recently received a lovely email from a customer, Mike, who told us he's owned his 1938 Austin 18 Norfolk for 60 years!

He was given the car as a 15-year-old schoolboy in 1966 after it was destined for the scrapyard. Since then it's been his daily transport, taken him to university, survived years of adventures, carried him all the way to the South West of France, and is still on the road today. What an incredible story, and proof that some cars really do become part of the family.

It got us thinking... what's the longest we've owned a car here at Trickett Welding?

πŸš— Nigel – Classic Mini – 20 years

πŸš— Rob – Toyota Aygo – bought brand new and still going strong after 18 years

πŸš— Neil – Audi A3 – 12 years

πŸš— Shaun R – VW Golf Mk2 GTI – 10 years

πŸš— Shaun M – VW Golf Mk4 – 7 years

πŸš— Tom – Audi A6 Allroad – 6 years

πŸš— Matt – Mk1 Ford Focus – 3 years

πŸš— Harlee – Mk4 Golf – 2 years (he's still the youngster of the team!)

And finally, there's Paul... who changes cars almost as often as Nigel goes on holiday, so he had to borrow his Dad's entry! πŸ˜„ His Dad's Alpine Renault A110 has been in the family for 52 years – which is actually slightly longer than Paul's been around!

πŸ“Έ We've included a photo of Mike's wonderful Austin alongside some of our team's long-term favourites.

So over to you...

πŸ‘‡ What's the longest you've owned the same car? Tell us what it is, how long you've had it, and if you've got a photo we'd love to see it in the comments!

πŸš— **"I've owned it for 10 years... and I've never had it serviced."**

Those were the words a customer proudly told us this week about his Toyota Yaris. In that time he'd covered around **93,000 miles** without a single service because, in his words, he'd "saved a fortune."

There's no doubt Toyota build fantastic cars. They are renowned for reliability.

**But no engine is maintenance-free.**

Engine oil isn't just there to make things slippery. It has a tough job to do. It lubricates moving parts, carries away heat, suspends microscopic metal particles from normal engine wear, neutralises acids created during combustion and helps keep the inside of the engine clean.

Over time, however, that oil begins to break down.

It becomes contaminated with carbon, fuel residue, moisture and tiny metal particles. The additives that protect the engine become depleted, the oil gradually becomes more acidic, and it starts to thicken into the sludge you can see in these photographs.

That sludge can:
πŸ”§ Restrict oil flow.
πŸ”§ Block narrow oil galleries.
πŸ”§ Starve camshafts, bearings and turbochargers of lubrication.
πŸ”§ Increase friction and operating temperatures.
πŸ”§ Lead to premature engine wear and, in severe cases, complete engine failure.

We've stripped plenty of engines over the years, and it's often obvious which ones have been regularly serviced... and which ones haven't.

❌ **And remember - an MOT is NOT a service.**

An MOT is simply a legal roadworthiness inspection. It checks whether your car meets the minimum safety and environmental standards **on that day**. It does **not** include changing the engine oil, replacing filters, inspecting service items or carrying out preventative maintenance.

A service is an investment in the future reliability of your vehicle.

Changing the oil and filter every year (or at the manufacturer's recommended interval) is one of the cheapest ways to extend the life of your engine. Spending Β£150–£300 on routine servicing is far preferable to facing a repair bill running into thousands for a worn timing chain, failed turbo or damaged engine.

Your car may seem to be running perfectly today...

But what's happening **inside** the engine could be telling a very different story.

πŸ’¬ We'd love to hear your thoughts. What's the highest mileage you've seen a car cover without a service? Have you ever stripped an engine and been shocked by what you found inside?

πŸ“£ Meet the Team – Shaun & Harlee πŸ‘¨β€πŸ”§πŸ‘¨β€πŸ”§

It’s been a little while since our last team introduction, but today we’re delighted to introduce two valued members of the Trickett Welding team.

On the left is Shaun, who has recently rejoined us after a previous stint with the company a few years ago. Shaun brings a wealth of knowledge and experience gained from many years working in the bodyshop industry, and we’re delighted to have him back as part of the team.

When he’s not at work, Shaun enjoys building and racing RC cars.

On the right is Harlee, who joined us a few months ago as our new Workshop Assistant. Harlee brings previous mechanical experience from his former role and has quickly become a valued member of the workshop team.

Outside of work, he enjoys working on classic Fords and has the rather unique hobby of keeping ferrets!

Please join us in giving Shaun and Harlee a warm welcome (and welcome back in Shaun’s case)! πŸ‘‹
