It’s the time of year to sort the MCA Small Ships Navigation & Radar course! We run these in Southampton & Poole and have just added a new date for December (w/c 7th Dec). Our courses are run by sub 24m specialists for sub 24m specialists and meet the new MCA requirement of one simulator per student to enhance the learning experience. 📚 RYA Day Skipper Theory – Classroom Course

The Day Skipper Theory course is a great introduction to navigation and passage planning, giving you the knowledge and skills needed to confidently plan and undertake coastal passages by day.

During the course, you’ll cover:

🧭 Navigation & chartwork – understanding charts, positions, courses and bearings
⚓ Passage planning – planning a safe passage from start to finish
🌊 Tides & tidal streams – calculating tidal heights and understanding tidal flow
☁️ Weather & meteorology – interpreting forecasts and understanding how weather affects your passage
🚢 Collision regulations – learning the rules of the road and how to identify and avoid collision situations
🔦 Lights, shapes & buoyage – understanding navigation marks and what they tell you
📍 Pilotage – planning and executing safe arrivals and departures
🛟 Safety & seamanship – essential knowledge for safe coastal cruising

The course is ideal for powerboaters and sailors who want to improve their navigation knowledge, gain an RYA qualification, or prepare for further practical training and more adventurous coastal cruising.

🎓 No previous navigation experience is required — just an interest in boating and a willingness to learn.

A number of our team currently or have previously worked or volunteered for the RNLI. The level of vitriol being directed at Stations and Crew is incredible as is the misinformation. Equally incredible, and humbling, is the support that those same Stations and Crew are receiving. 🌊 MEET SPINDRIFT 🌊

Meet Spindrift — our customer’s own Explorer Elite 165, the boat we’re currently putting through her paces during their RYA Powerboat Level 2 training.

But where does the name come from?

Spindrift is the salt spray blown from the crests of breaking waves during a gale or strong wind. 🌬️🌊

We think it’s a pretty perfect name for a boat that’s going to spend plenty of time exploring the water!

At Powerboat Training UK, we’ve been delivering training for 25 years. And while experience counts for a lot, there’s one thing we’ve always believed:

Every day is a learning day.

Every boat is different.
Every skipper is different.
And every day on the water brings something new to learn.

That’s why training on a customer’s own boat is so valuable. It’s not just about learning the skills required to pass a course — it’s about building the knowledge, confidence and practical experience to safely and competently handle the boat you’ll actually be using.

And after 25 years, we’re still learning too. Because the water has a wonderful way of teaching you something new every time you head out. 🌊

FILLED _______ONE SPACE NOW AVAILABLE - Poole w/c 14th Sept - Are you a commercial Skipper or a leisure user keen to operate at the highest level of radar and electronic navigation competence? If you are then you should be looking at our MCA Small Ships Navigation & Radar course. We run this course across both our Southampton and Poole bases and are now able (with approval from the MCA) to come and run the course at your home location. With our courses there was always a station per learner as we have always been of the view that doing so created the best learning experience and the best value for your investment. We’re delighted to see that the MCA shares this view and in their course update in July states a 1:1 ratio as a mandatory requirement.
