Rover P4

We do like a car with su***de doors here at AM Restorations, and this lovely Rover P4 is back with us once again for further work.

This time, the car is in for a new clutch. On most vehicles, this would be considered a fairly straightforward job, but on the Rover P4 things are a little different! The gearbox has to be removed from inside the car itself, which means taking the seats out first and still working in a very confined space to complete the job properly.

The car has previously been with us for braking system work and routine maintenance, including replacement rear wheel cylinders, brake shoes, tappet adjustment, and valve timing checks.

It’s always interesting working on cars from this era, where engineering decisions were often very different from what we’d expect today.

Triumph Stag

This Stag recently came to us with a fluid leak, which on inspection turned out to be a water leak from the water pump.

Water pumps are a well-known weak point on Stags, and sourcing new ones isn’t always straightforward. Even when replacements are available, the quality can be inconsistent, something that’s been an issue since these cars were first built. Because of this, if you have a known good original unit, it’s often far better to repair it rather than risk introducing further problems with a new part.

In this case, we opted to repair the existing water pump, including carefully skimming the lower side of the impeller to restore proper function.

It’s a great example of how sympathetic repair work can often be the best solution when it comes to keeping classic cars reliable and true to their original engineering.

Prevention is Better Than Cure!

This MGB GT, relatively new to its owner, recently came to us for one of our Vehicle Health Checks, a great way to get ahead of any potential issues and enjoy worry-free motoring.

At AM Restorations, we offer a range of services to keep your classic or modern retro car in top condition, and the health check is one of the most valuable. It’s designed to ensure your car is performing as it should, while also highlighting any areas that may need attention now or in the near future.

The inspection is broken down into key areas, including exterior, interior, engine bay, suspension, braking system, and other vital components. We then use a simple traffic light system: red, amber, and green, to clearly show what requires immediate attention, what may need addressing soon, and what’s all good.

If you’ve recently purchased a classic or simply want peace of mind now that the driving season is getting into full swing, a health check is a great place to start.

Triumph TR6

This lovely red Triumph TR6 recently paid us a visit after a bit of an unfortunate mishap.

Owned by a couple based in the United States, the car lives here in Kent and was being enjoyed on a trip down to see family in Cornwall. Unfortunately, a raised car park entrance led to some damage to the exhaust.

We carried out the necessary repairs, including re-bonding the exhaust joint, ensuring everything was secure and ready for the road once again.

With the work completed, the TR6 is now back in good health and ready to continue its journey down to Cornwall.

Ford Mondeo

This Ford Mondeo recently came to us for a range of structural and corrosion protection work, showing that “modern classics” still benefit hugely from proper preventative maintenance and fabrication repairs.

We carried out a sub-frame replacement, refinishing it with a direct-to-metal coating, a tough, hard-wearing protection system commonly used in marine environments for its durability and corrosion resistance.

Both sills were also reconstructed with new fabricated sections, restoring strength and ensuring the structure is properly protected for the years ahead. In addition, we treated and addressed rear door corrosion, followed by full proofing to help prevent future deterioration.
To finish, the vehicle received a comprehensive underbody wax treatment, helping seal and protect vulnerable areas from further corrosion.

This Ford Mondeo is a great example of how we work on not only vintage and classic cars, but also modern classics that are now reaching the point where preventative restoration makes all the difference.

If you’ve got a vintage, cult or modern classic, we’d love to help keep it in top condition.

Ford Capri 2.0 Laser

This Capri recently came to us for a range of maintenance and repair work to keep it in great running order.

We fitted new shock absorbers to improve ride quality and handling, along with carrying out a general safety check. A few smaller jobs were also addressed, including clearing a blocked washer jet and replacing a worn bonnet stay grommet.

One of the more unusual tasks, something you don’t hear very often these days, was a fault with the original radio cassette player. After removing the unit, we found internal slack within the mechanism, so it’s now been sent off to a specialist for repair.

The Capri 2.0 Laser marked one of the final runs of the iconic Ford Capri, making it a great example of a well-loved classic still being enjoyed today.

Mazda RX7 Complete!

This Mazda RX7 has now been completed and leaves us following a full bare metal respray, an excellent example of a customer 'doing right by the car'.

What began as a simple paint refresh quickly evolved when we uncovered the true condition of the bodywork. Previous repairs had been carried out to a price point, and in some areas, we found as many as 8–9 layers of paint. Following a discussion with the customer, to do the job properly we took the car back to bare metal, allowing us to address the body correctly and ensure a high-quality finish throughout.

The car has now been refinished in Montego Blue, a rare colour for the RX7 that was only available on a limited run. This choice not only adds an ‘OEM plus’ feel to the car, but it also adds to the car’s originality while also setting it apart, giving it a striking and period-correct appearance.

Restorations like this are about more than just appearance. By stripping everything back and starting again, we ensure a quality finish and preserve the car for years to come, something that’s especially important on classics where corrosion and previous repairs can often be hidden beneath the surface.

March Warm Up!

Hopefully, last weekend gave us a glimpse of the summer weather to come! If so, we’re all in for some great driving days to enjoy our classic cars.

With Drive It Day just around the corner, now is the perfect time to book your car in for a service or tackle those niggling jobs that could take the shine off your summer motoring.
This Triumph Stag is a perfect example of an owner getting ahead of the game. We restored this Stag a few years ago, and the owner has been a long-term customer ever since.

Recently, the car developed some electrical issues that came to a head, prompting a home visit from Andy! It’s now with us for a new alternator and some other battery-related consumables. We also noticed fogging in the rear lamps, meaning the rear lamp seals need replacing.

And remember: prevention is better than cure! If you’re unsure what your car might need before the summer, why not book a Vehicle Health Check? This thorough inspection highlights potential issues across the exterior, interior, engine bay, suspension, braking system, and other key components. Using a traffic light system, red, amber, green, we show what requires immediate attention, what needs looking at soon, and what’s all clear, keeping your classic car performing at its best.

Triumph 2000 Mk 1 Estate (Long-Term Project Update)

Our Triumph 2000 project has reached another milestone, with recent work completed on the tailgate aperture and roof gutter repairs as part of the ongoing restoration.

This particular Triumph 2000 is an estate, which means it was originally based on a saloon body and sent to a coachbuilder to be converted. This, while sounding like a simple process and one that was very popular at the time, does complicate things when it comes to restoring these cars, for example, the owner supplied a replacement door for the project, which was in great condition; however it was a saloon door, when it came to fitting it, the window frame section of the door was a completely different shape! We cut out the old estate door frame and welded it to the replacement door and adjusted the door to fit.

The saloon to estate change on these cars also yields some interesting things you don't see in other restorations. During the work, we discovered lead in the rear structure, and a remnant of the original saloon frame was visible on the inside of the wings.

Fabricating and repairing the roof guttering is a delicate process, but essential to protect the car from water ingress and ensure longevity. Every step of this restoration is about maintaining the car’s originality while strengthening it for the years to come.

Rust Repairs!

This week in the workshop has very much been a week of rust repairs, with a couple of very different cars needing attention to keep them solid and roadworthy.

We’ve had a Java Green Triumph Spitfire in for corrosion repairs around the inside of the A-posts and the inner sill. Once the repairs were completed, the areas were sealed with seam sealer, rust-proofed and then body painted to match the rather fetching Java Green finish.

While the car was with us, we also tracked down and repaired a few electrical gremlins, including loose connections affecting the headlamps and other components. The final touch will be the installation of a new tonneau cover, with fresh poppers fitted so it attaches securely to the car.

We’ve also had a Rover 416 GTi in the workshop. This came to us due to corrosion on the subframe which had caused the captive nuts holding the anti-roll bar to come loose and spin. To resolve this, we removed the damaged nuts, welded in replacements along with a new reinforcing plate, and added a pair of “factory plus” access holes. These will allow wax protection to be applied in the future, helping to prevent corrosion returning in this area.

All in all, a week of tackling rust and ensuring these cars are properly repaired and protected for the road ahead.

Toyota MR2 Turbo

This imported Toyota MR2 Turbo has arrived for some mechanical work to keep it performing at its best.

Our work includes a timing belt and water pump replacement, along with a full service and brake inspection to ensure the car is safe and reliable. The suspension is also being upgraded: the old coilovers are to be replaced with a new BC Racing set for improved handling and ride quality.

We’re also investigating a speedometer issue to ensure accurate readings and attending to minor welding repairs to the near-side rear inner arch, followed by protective coating to preserve the structure.

Ongoing attention to both mechanical and structural details is key to keeping a car like the MR2 Turbo in top form, whether it’s on the road or track.
