Booked your driving test?

Don’t have an instructor for those “few lessons” you “need” and the use of a car just so you can pass?!

If this sounds familiar, it’s worth noting that we are not hire cars. If something goes wrong in that car it is literally our livelihood.

Driving instructors are well aware of the many people who book practical tests and then rush around asking every instructor in the local area hoping someone will take you. We get messages from you several times a week! The answer is always the same-no!

So let’s look at why you are you finding it hard to get an instructor to take you on….

The truth is we are busy, and booked up weeks if not months in advance.

We therefore do not take pupils we don’t know and haven’t trained, we concentrate on those we do know and are prepared to put the required hours in.

Why you ask??

Because it takes more than a “few lessons” to assess your ability for a start. We then have to spend time to correct the faults and ensure that you have enough time to practise driving to the safe standard that is required to pass.

We then have to ensure you can consistently drive SAFELY and independently without help…. Did you know that we can LOSE OUR JOBS if we keep taking people to test who are not ready. None of you would risk your job just so that someone you don't really know, or even someone you do know, could mess with your job (usually unintentionally but it's important that you know what this truly means for us).

So hopefully now you can start to see why your kind offer of a “few lessons” is often rejected.

I have never met a student yet who has been able to meet the standard required to pass a test in two lessons, and I would invite any instructor to correct me if I’m wrong.

So why have you booked this test?
Maybe you're in a rush to pass- I get it we want it done ASAP.

Also, it’s expensive learning to drive isn’t it, lessons are costly we understand that, but so is a funeral and the devastation afterwards is horrendous…. Driving is even more expensive than learning.

Ask yourself this…(and be honest)….
Would you jump into a pool knowing you aren’t able to swim yet….in the hope you might just survive? Of course you wouldn’t!

So then why book (and or sit) a test you’ve not prepared for, and aren’t at the standard to pass and could risk other peoples lives all so you can just “have a go” - yes I’m talking about the examiner who has to sit next to you fearing for his life, and the other road users you’ve put at risk all to “have a go”?

So please - if you’ve made it this far…don’t book a test until you have spoken with an instructor willing to take you - and PLEASE - be patient.

It takes time to learn to drive. You cannot rush experience. We cannot fake experience. It takes time, patience and a lot of practise.

You're blocking up an already back logged system, and will no doubt have to cancel that test when you fail to find an instructor to “hire”, thereby making it even more difficult for people who are ready to book a test.

🚗 Why are some driving lessons £30 an hour while others are £50?

It’s a question I see asked all the time.

The cheapest option isn’t always the best value, and the most expensive isn’t automatically the best either. But it’s worth understanding why prices can vary.

Some lower-priced lessons are offered by trainee driving instructors (PDIs). There is absolutely nothing wrong with learning with a trainee—many are fantastic instructors who are well trained, enthusiastic and provide an excellent standard of tuition.

However, it’s worth asking a few questions:

❓Are they receiving ongoing training and support?

❓How much experience do they have?

❓Are they charging a lower price because they’re building experience, or because the driving school has told them to?

Unfortunately, there is a growing concern within the industry that some trainee instructors aren’t receiving the ongoing training and support they should once they start teaching. A trainee should continue developing with regular coaching, observations and feedback—not simply be left to get on with it.

Something many learners don’t realise is that trainee instructors often still have to pay:
🚗 Franchise fees
📚 Weekly training fees
⛽ Fuel
🛠️ Vehicle costs
🛡️ Insurance
💷 Tax and all the usual self-employed business expenses

If a trainee is charging £30 an hour, it’s worth thinking how much of that they’re actually taking home.

Personally, I don’t think good trainee instructors should have to compete by being the cheapest. If they’re receiving quality training and providing quality lessons, they deserve to charge a fair rate.

Likewise, experienced instructors charging £40–£50 an hour aren’t simply “more expensive.” You’re paying for years of experience, continued professional development and, hopefully, lessons that help you pass efficiently and become a safe driver for life.

⚠️ One more thing that’s really important…

There is also an increasing problem in some areas with illegal driving tuition—people charging for lessons without holding the correct instructor licence.

Before your first lesson, always check that your instructor has a green ADI badge (fully qualified) or a pink PDI badge (trainee instructor) clearly displayed in the windscreen. If there isn’t a badge on display, don’t be afraid to ask why. Your instructor should be properly licensed to charge for lessons.

At the end of the day, don’t choose an instructor based on price alone.

Choose someone who is recommended, invested in their pupils and committed to giving you the best possible tuition.

Sometimes paying a little more per hour can actually save you money in the long run.
