So today on this lovely sunny morning, my pupil Ross Haydon went up to the dreaded test centre in the hopes of turning his green provisional licence into a nice shiny pink one 🤞 Well looks like the test center isn’t such a scary place after all 😁 with my help and guidance, Ross is another pupil of mine to get only 2 minors and a great first time pass 🎉 this hadn’t been an easy road for Ross, as I’ve always said driving isn’t something that’s always picked up quickly, however Ross has proved with determination, resilience and sheer hard work it’s only a matter of time until you get the outcome you have worked so hard for! 🎉 well done mate super proud of you, what a birthday present you have given yourself 🥳 Enjoy your new freedom and stay safe 🙌

So today this happened ……
🤩 This is Kieran Hill, on this beautiful day not only did the sun shine but kieran went out and turned his green provisional licence into a nice new shiny pink one 🤩 with my help and guidance, Kieran worked hard every lesson, listened to my advice and today is the proof. With only 4 minors, he smashed his test first time 🎉 so is yet another pupil to enter the first time pass hall of fame 🙌🥳 it has been a pleasure to teach you mate and you so deserved today’s outcome. Remember stay safe out there and enjoy your new found freedom 🚘🎉

Just a quick update to let you know that from 1st April, my lesson prices will be increasing,

This is due to the continued rise in fuel costs and running expenses.

All of those with blocks already paid will be charged at the original price untill that block is finished then the new prices will start from then.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support 🫶

Next steps for changes to the driving test booking service
The rules for booking practical car driving tests are changing to make the system fairer. These changes are part of the outcome of our consultation to improve the way driving tests are booked.

Following the changes announced in January 2026 on limiting the number of times a test can be changed or swapped (from 31 March 2026), we’re now able to confirm the dates for the rest of the planned rule changes:

from 12 May 2026, only learners are allowed to book a test and make changes to their own booking
from 9 June 2026, learners can move their booked test only to nearby centres
Why we’re making these changes
We know this is a significant change for driving instructors.

Misuse of the booking system has made it harder for us to offer slots fairly. The consultation response to this change was split, with some of you feeling strongly that learners should have full control. Others felt just as strongly that instructors need flexibility to manage bookings effectively.

We've made a decision based on the evidence – our consultation found that the majority of learners wanted full control and we have acted to prioritise fairness for learners and tackle exploitation. But we recognise that reasonable professionals disagree on this and we respect that.

Introducing these changes means learners should only ever pay the actual fee DVSA charges.

From 12 May 2026: only learner drivers can book and manage their own test
From 12 May 2026, no-one other than learner drivers will be able to lawfully book or manage a car driving test.

This includes unofficial booking services and cancellation finder services. These services will no longer be able to book tests on behalf of learners and your pupils should not use them.

Any of your pupils who aren’t able to book via GOV.UK and need additional support will still be able to access test booking by calling DVSA’s customer service centre.

Learner declaration
Alongside this, from 12 May 2026, your pupils must confirm when they book or manage their test, that they:

are the learner who is going to take the test
agree to a new set of terms and conditions
This will be through a declaration box on the public online booking service on GOV.UK. Any bookings made through the DVSA customer service centre will need to agree to the terms verbally before making a booking.

Your pupils will not be able to book their test if they don’t do these things.

Changes to the online business service

So that learner drivers are in control of their own personal data, driving instructors and other third parties will no longer be allowed to use the online business service for car driving tests, to:

book tests
change tests
cancel tests
swap tests between pupils
From 9 June 2026: restricting the location tests can be moved to
From 9 June 2026, learners will be able to move a test to only the 3 nearest centres to wherever your pupil’s test is booked on that date.

Reminder on limiting number of times a test can be changed
We previously announced we would be reducing from 6 to 2 the number of times a learner driver can change their test. This change will come into force from 31 March 2026.

You can read more detailed guidance about what’s changing. It includes examples to help you understand the new rules and lists of where learners will be able to move tests.

Consultation
launched on
introducing a
Minimum
Learning Period
As part of the government’s
Road Safety Strategy, the
Department for Transport (DfT)
is consulting on introducing a 3
is consulting on introducing a 3
or 6 month Minimum Learning
Period (MLP) for learner drivers.
This will include introducing:
a minimum amount of time to
be spent learning and a
minimum number of learning
hours
a mandated learning syllabus
and how this learning can be
conducted
These changes would only apply
to the practical test for cars.
How would a minimum
learning period help?
Our priority is to help everyone
through a lifetime of safe and
sustainable journeys.
Statistically younger drivers are
more likely to be involved in
collisions compared to older
drivers. In 2024, drivers aged 17
to 24 years old were involved in
24% of fatal and serious
collisions in Great Britain despite
them only representing 6% of
licence holders.
Introducing an MLP will provide
learners more time to develop
their skills before they take their
practical driving test. It also
provides learners with the
opportunity to gain more
supervised driving experience in
varied conditions, such as at
night, in heavy traffic and
different weather conditions.
How to share your views
You can read the minimum
learning period consultation and
respond on GOV.UK.
The consultation will close at
11:59pm on 31 March 2026.
11:59pm on 31 March 2026.
Updating our campaign
messaging
To help educate learners and
their parents on the importance
of gaining as much road
experience as possible to help
them be test ready and become
a safe driver, we shared the
average of number of hours of
practice it takes to pass the test.
Because we are consulting on
introducing a Minimum Learning
Period, we have removed this
average
from the campaign website and
resources, including
the ‘supervise a learner’
guidance.
We are now advising learners
that there’s no minimum number
of lessons they must have or
of lessons they must have or
hours you must practise driving
to pass through the 5 levels of
progress.
How many lessons a learner
needs will depend on how
quickly they learn.
They are more likely to
pass their driving test first
time with a combination of:
professional driving lessons
with an approved instructor
private practice with family or
friends
We also emphasise
the importance of learners giving
themselves enough time to
learn. The more driving
experience they build up
before the test – through both
lessons and practice – the safer
driver they’ll be on the road
after they pass.
after they pass.
