As I went to work this morning, the Frost Protection that I have set up through the Nest Thermostat had powered up my Eberspacher.
Today sees our first frost ‘up north’, and it’s coming to us all very soon.
Now is the time to think about protecting your water system from the winter.
It’s important that you don’t have any water in your tanks (particularly if you have a stored hot water tank (Truma etc.)), leaving your taps open (if a mixer tap, ensure it’s in the half hot-half cold position) to allow for expansion of any water that you couldn’t remove. Don’t forget your sink waste traps - they store quite a lot of water!

If you don’t have it already (mint van ‘conversions’ don’t!!), consider talking to your local camper builder about adding a forced air extraction system (actually, most won’t understand what you’re talking about 😫). This ensures that your pipes have virtually NO water left in your system and can, in many cases, be retrofitted - they’re standard in our builds.

Here's a useful post about cleaning your Maxxfan.
This one has been in our van since 2019 and we've only done the basic 'take the mesh off and wipe the blades' cleaning until now.
It was quite overdue a full clean, so we've compiled a set of photos and a method sheet for anyone wanting (needing!) to do theirs:

You first need to remove the ceiling trim surround and disconnect the cables to the unit. If these have been inline crimped, you can simply cut these (one at a time unless you have removed the fuse to the fan circuit - which we recommend!). Now is the time that you can prep the cables for replacing the fan and use Wago connectors for a simpler removal in the future.

Now you need to go to the outside of the fan and remove the x4 screws that hold the fan in place. This id easier to do once you have manually opened the lid from the inside.

Carefully lift the fan unit out of the frame and place it on your work table.

Now it's time to strip the unit for cleaning!

Picture 1:

After removing the mesh screen, undo the x4 crosshead screws and place somewhere safe.

Next comes the removal of the k**b that winds the lid up and down manually.

Picture 3:

Using a 2.5mm Allen Key, Loosen the fan setscrew. Pull the fan blade set out - you will need to wiggle it if it is a bit solid.

The mesh locking tabs can be slid out at this point.

Now remove the screws that attach the fan unit to the outer lid.

Picture 7:

The 'legs' that lift the lid will now need to be prised outwards to remove the arms from the lid. Be careful not to lose the x2 white bushes!

There is the unit separated from the (dirty!!) lid.

You may want to remove the outer mesh for cleaning. This ih held in place by the plastic 'frame' which is secured by x4 screws. Be careful here as the plastic 'frame' may be a little brittle!

Picture 10 & 11:

We tried several things to clean the inner lid - alcohol, acetone (in a not-seen part as it may melt the lid!), Autoglym Fast Glass, but what we found worked best was some car wax (Autoglym Ultra Deep Shine was what we had on the shelf!). We cleaned the inner and outer shell and it almost brought it back to new!

This is the bit that you will see the most! A nice clean fan blade!

Assemble is simply the reverse of the above.

Enjoy another 7 years of a clean Maxxfan hehehe.

Here’s another bespoke roof rack almost ready to install on a customer’s Crafter - we’re just waiting for the awning LED strip to arrive tomorrow.

I must admit, we much prefer the rugged look to these tubular aluminium racks over the flat pack ones, but it’s definitely down to the individual.

Ever question why some companies charge ‘a bit too much’, in your mind?
Ever think ‘I can go to XYZ and it’ll be much cheaper!’
Well, NOT all installers are made equal!

This is how a ‘company’ installed a diesel heater! They cut a hole in the van floor, instead of lowering the fuel tank… drilled a hole in the tank and pushed some copper brake pipe in as the fuel feed! The customer noticed poor fuel economy and a diesel smell 😫.

We do not cut corners on any of our work, so when you think you will ‘get it cheaper elsewhere’, please think carefully.

Need an Eberspacher heater fitted in your van (we know it’s the last thing you’re thinking of right now 🤣), drop us a line and get it installed BEFORE you need it.
