Is your workshop feeling the squeeze? 🛠️📉

The latest data from the SMMT, IMI, and the Motor Ombudsman paints a challenging picture for independent garage owners. Between record-high operating costs, a structural skills gap, and an ageing car parc increasingly locked behind Secure Gateways (SGW), the old way of doing things is hitting a ceiling.

With 92% of repairers citing rising costs as their biggest hurdle, and a persistent shortage of diagnostic specialists, trying to "hire your way out" of complex repair issues is becoming a mathematical dead end for many.

The shift is clear: Success now relies on efficiency and expert support, not just more equipment.

We’ve analysed these industry trends to understand exactly what they mean for your workshop’s future. From why the "10-year car boom" is both a blessing and a technical bottleneck, to how the labour crisis is changing the way you need to approach diagnostic support.

We’re breaking down the data and providing actionable strategies to help you protect your margins and handle the complex jobs your competitors are forced to turn away.

Head over to the Newsroom on our website to read the full breakdown and see how you can navigate these sector challenges to keep your bays moving.

🤔 3 Months Of SERMI In The UK - What Are Workshops Learning?

🔐 3 months on from the UK launch of SERMI, Opus IVS is seeing a growing number of workshops becoming SERMI approved and an increasing demand for security related remote services.

As more manufacturers integrate SERMI into their applications, one thing is becoming clear... For workshops carrying out advanced diagnostics, coding and programming, SERMI is quickly becoming an essential part of the repairs!

📲 A Smooth Process

Where manufacturers have implemented SERMI correctly, the process is simple, A SERMI approved technician authorises the job through the Digidentity app, allowing Opus IVS to securely carry out remote services in line with the scheme's requirements.

⚙️ More Than Just Security Components

Modern vehicles are increasingly linking software updates across multiple control modules. Even if your repair starts with a routine programming task, security related modules can unexpectedly become part of the process, meaning SERMI approval may be required before the job can be completed.

🚗 What More Can We Expect?

As manufacturers continue to expand what they classify as "security related" systems, the need for SERMI certification is only expected to grow. Workshops that regularly carry out coding, programming and advanced diagnostics should consider whether now is the right time to become SERMI approved!

⚡ JLR Mild Hybrid Charging Fault - Expert Diagnostics Uncover The Real Cause!

When a Land Rover Discovery Sport MHEV arrived with a "Charging System Fault" warning and fault code P0658-16, initial testing pointed towards a failed starter/generator.

After replacing the component, however, the fault immediately returned and the 12V battery still wasn't charging!

🔎 Looking Beyond The Obvious

The workshop contacted the Opus IVS 360 team, where one of our JLR Master Technicians remotely connected to the vehicle using the DrivePro 2 and JLR's Topix Cloud dealer platform.

👀 The Critical Piece Of Information

By analysing live data from the DC to DC converter, the technician identified a mismatch between the requested and active operating modes, confirming that the converter itself had failed.

🛠️ The Right Repair

After replacing the DC to DC converter, the Opus IVS 360 team carried out a second remote session to code and programme the new unit, bringing the system back online and clearing all faults.

✅ Getting Back On The Road

Following final checks and a road test, the charging system was restored and the vehicle returned to normal operation!

🚀 Expert diagnostics and remote programming support can prevent unnecessary repeat repairs and help workshops reach the correct fix faster!

🚙 Range Rover Evoque DPF & AdBlue Fault - Expert Diagnostic Support Delivers The Fix!

When a Range Rover Evoque arrived displaying a "DPF Full" warning alongside an AdBlue mileage countdown, the customer was understandably concerned that the SCR/AdBlue system was the root cause.

However, after reviewing the fault codes and vehicle data Opus IVS JLR Master Technician, Simon Thomas, identified a different starting point!

🔍 Looking Beyond The Warning Messages

Multiple DPF and NOx-related faults were stored, but Simon advised that the DPF issue needed addressing first, as excessive soot loading can often trigger secondary AdBlue and emissions faults.

📊 The Key Finding

Using DrivePro 2 remote diagnostics, Simon confirmed the DPF soot volume had reached 49g, well beyond the threshold for a successful regeneration.

🛠️ A Targeted Repair Strategy

Rather than replacing components unnecessarily, the customer opted to have the DPF professionally cleaned. While the DPF was removed, the AdBlue injector was also inspected and cleaned before all relevant DPF and SCR adaptations were reset.

✅ The Result

After completing the recommended procedures and topping up the DEF system to specification, all fault codes cleared automatically and the warning messages disappeared!
