With Japanese cars of the 90's & 00's becoming ever more popular and prices steadily rising, we have noticed a large influx of these in to our workshop.
It's worth ensuring that if you choose to invest in your dream JDM icon, that you're aware of what could be lurking beneath the facade....
The photos show three popular models of Japanese marques: Nissan Silvia, Subaru Impreza and Mazda RX7, all examples were road going, and had little or no mention of corrosion on MOT's. During our inspection process (if you're interested in this service, please contact us) we provide our clients with a catalogue of images, and the posted pictures show a small snippet of what we found - corroded sills, subframe mounts almost useless, seams with corrosion both in and on them, amongst other issues.
A simple wire brush, corrosion converter and cover over with underseal will not fix such issues. At best this will help slow the progression of corrosion, but in some instances, it can make the situation worse, corrosion is parasitic and must be removed to the fullest extent to give your beloved car the best chance of long-term survival - a 'quick' fix will likely rear its ugly head in the future. If you're choosing to buy any vehicle, don't always take the MOT as a given, and approach it with healthy scepticism and the willingness to look beyond the shiny visible bodywork - especially if your chosen car has the propensity to rust!
