Ever wondered what actually goes on under the bonnet during a full service?

A lot of folks from Quinton and Dudley pop in for an MOT and assume a service is basically the same thing. While an MOT just checks if your car is legally safe to be on the road, a proper service is where we get the spanners out to keep it running sweet. It means dropping the old, sludgy oil and swapping out clogged filters so your engine can actually breathe. It’s the difference between passing a basic safety test and driving smoothly on your commute down the M5.

It’s funny how everyone thinks modern cars are just big computers nowadays, isn't it?

While the diagnostic laptops are brilliant for pointing us in the right direction, fixing the actual problem usually comes down to good old-fashioned patience and a trusty socket set. I was just saving the job file on our system after sorting a motor from Quinton this morning. The computer warned of a complex engine fault, but getting right under the bonnet revealed it was just a simple loose bracket pinching a wire. Sometimes you just can't beat a bit of manual problem-solving!

It’s amazing what a quick poke around with a torch can reveal when your car is up on the ramps.

We had a local lad from Dudley bring his motor in yesterday for a routine once-over before a big family trip. He thought it was running perfectly, but when we got it lifted up, we found a nasty split on the inside wall of his rear tyre that you’d never ever spot while it was parked on the driveway. It’s always the bits you can’t see that catch you out on the M5! Getting a proper visual check underneath can genuinely save you from a miserable roadside breakdown.

It’s funny how we check our fuel gauge every time we jump in the car, but rarely give our tyres a second glance until it’s too late.

We had a customer from Smethwick pull in yesterday with a completely flat tyre. They thought they'd just caught a nail on the Wolverhampton Road, but the inner tread was actually worn right down to the wire from poor wheel alignment. A quick walk around your car to check the tread depth, the classic 20p coin test still works a treat, can honestly save you a massive headache and keep you safe in the wet weather.

Ever hit a pothole so hard you actually apologise to your car?

We’ve all been there, especially with the state of some of the roads around Dudley and Smethwick right now! I was just saving a suspension repair log on our system, and it reminded me how easily a nasty bump can knock your tracking completely out of whack. If you notice your steering wheel pulling slightly to one side or your front tyres wearing down faster on one edge, it’s usually a clear sign something underneath needs a quick adjustment.

Ever felt a slight shudder through the steering wheel when you're braking?

It usually starts small, maybe just when you're coming to a stop on the Wolverhampton Road, but it's one of those things you really shouldn't ignore. A regular from Dudley popped in earlier this week absolutely convinced their whole suspension was shot. After getting right up into the wheel arch with a torch, I was actually just saving the inspection record as Highpoint motor .jpg on our system, we found it was just heavily worn brake pads starting to score the discs. Catching a brake squeak early genuinely saves you from having to replace the more expensive parts later!

You know that one maintenance job everyone tells you never to ignore?

The timing belt is exactly that. We had a regular from Smethwick pop in asking if he could hold off on getting his changed for another year. The honest truth is, if that rubber belt snaps while you're driving down the Wolverhampton Road, it can completely wreck the engine. It's a proper job to replace, which is why I was just saving the workshop record on our computer system, but getting it sorted on time saves you from a massive bill down the line. Most manufacturers recommend a swap every 40,000 to 60,000 miles.

I was just sorting out some garage paperwork and saving this photo to our system, and it got me thinking about how quickly the mileage creeps up when you’re just doing the daily running around.

Between the regular trips across Quinton and the daily commute up the M5, it's so easy to lose track of when your last service actually was. We see plenty of motors coming into the workshop that are running a bit sluggish simply because they desperately need fresh oil and clean filters. A proper routine service helps your engine breathe a lot easier and can genuinely save you a few quid at the petrol pump, which we could all do with right now!

You know that sinking feeling when a little yellow light suddenly pops up on your dashboard?

It always seems to happen when you’re running late for work heading towards Dudley, doesn't it? A lot of folks panic and assume the worst, but often it’s something as simple as a sensor playing up. That being said, ignoring it is never a great idea. As a general rule of thumb: if it’s red, pull over safely. If it’s amber, it just means you need to get it checked out before a small ni**le turns into a massive repair bill.
