Republic Report: Hey, get on with the story...

Ok. Here are the repairs for the LH side of the 1989 Porsche 911. Lots of yummy rust to deal with around the usual places where a 911 likes to rot.

Through a combination of genuine panels and self fabricated repair sections I worked my way through the corrosion and replaced with new metal. Inner side gusset, inner sill, outer section of the floor pan, middle sill, outer sill, lower rear quarter, A pillar, lifting points, rear anti roll bar bracket and front section of the inner wing/bumper bracket all received attention and, mostly, replacement. Phew.

Then repeated for the RH side, save for the front inner wing. To save repetition, lets have a look at the LH here.

Republic Rescue:

When was the last time you saw a Zastava Yugo 511 on the road?

If it was this particular one, it would have been 19 years ago in 2007 when this was last on the road!

Obviously anyone reading this is already thinking rust, rust rust but, not in this case! Having spent this time off the road in a cosy garage, other than some dings, dents and occasional scab, this Yugo needed no new metal 🤘

After removing, cleaning out, treating the fuel tank to a fresh coat of raptor and a new fuel pump, the fuel system was good to go.

New oil and filter, spark plugs and a cambelt etc, and 10 mins later the engine was running!

A bit of a top end tap was present and needed investigating but, other than regular running gear, absolutely everything else seemed fine.

New brakes all round (master cylinder, caliper, wheel cyls, hoses etc), rear suspension arms, track control arms and the running gear was sorted.

Engine tapping turned out to be a worn cam lobe on #4 exhaust valve.

So off came the cam box and cylinder head whereby the top end was fully reconditioned after sourcing a genuine NOS camshaft for it. All the valves also correctly shimmed.

With the head off, the core plugs were replaced, new water pump, thermostat and hoses to sort the cooling system.

The sump was removed and bottom end bearings and journals checked - all ok. A new oil pump was installed as well just for good measure.

Once rebuilt, the engine was now lovely and quiet and eager to be revved as these Fiat engines just love!

The bodywork was given a good mop and polish and brought back to life with new number plates as the finishing touch.

A clean pass MOT was then acquired along with 5 new tyres and refurbished wheel trims and now ready for years of motoring again.

And as Sam Fox once advised "Wally, you should have gone to Swithland Motors and bought a Yugo" (Google it 😂)

Republic Resistance:

Much resistance was encountered when trying to replace this most oddest of bottom ball joints today and very little space for access.

However, with the combination of vehicle weight and heat, it soon relented 😎

Republic Relief

Image out horror when we spotted this today! 😱

Symptom was a very light knocking and, with a torn ball joint rubber, that was our prime suspect.

However, once we removed the arm we couldn't believe what we were seeing!

New arm fitted and other side checked at the same time.

Disaster averted

Republic report:

So then. Where to start on a Spitfire that has been off the road since 1992? Start by dismantling the car, cleaning up the detritus and take a look at that yummy rust.

A corroded Spitfire body is best repaired on the chassis to retain its dimensions otherwise the body can go a bit floppy and will not fit correctly once reunited with the chassis. So even though this presents its own challenges, the body stayed in situ. The car was braced across the door apertures for good measure before commencing work.

The customer had supplied a replacement OS door, new old stock with surface rust but solid and better than the battered and decaying original. So that was a quick win.

I decided to work my way out of the car and begin with a floor pan. The pans had seen better days and enjoyed their own ventilation, so out with the old and in with the new. Again, quality new items were supplied with the car. The old pan had already detached itself from the sill so it was removed from the rest of the body carefully. Metal repairs were let into the bulkheads front and rear before lots of in and out with the floor pan and trim and fettle to fit. Then welded in.

Such a large panel in place inspired confidence so I went for the inner sill sections, here a mixture of panels and a fabricated repair to the bottom of the A pillar.

Note that some photos are 'in progress'. Of course the welds were dressed before sealing or refinishing!

It's been a very very very long time since this patient breathed of its own free will.

Sounds very happy for a first try 😎
