Most drivers stop in the waiting area when the light turns red.

That feels right. It isn't. ❌

Why getting this wrong could cost you your driving test. πŸ‘‡

The light is green. You cross the stop line and enter the right-turn waiting area, waiting for a safe gap in oncoming traffic.

The signal changes β€” amber, then red.

The Common Mistake:
❌ Freezing in the box and waiting for the next green cycle.
(This is what catches most learners off guard.)

What the DVSA Standards Require:

Once you have legally crossed the stop line on green to take up your right-turn position, you have committed to the movement.

Your priority when the lights change is to safely clear the junction the moment an oncoming gap appears β€” even if the light has turned red.

Staying in the box and waiting for the next green cycle blocks traffic and is likely to be recorded as a serious fault on your driving test.πŸ›‘

This comes up frequently on real test routes across Nottingham β€” including Chilwell and Colwick β€” and it catches learners out because moving on a red light feels completely counterintuitive.

But according to official testing standards, it's what you are expected to do to keep traffic flowing safely.

Something I notice in almost every first lesson:

The learner is thinking about what their hands and feet are doing β€” when they should be thinking about the road.

That's not a criticism. It's completely normal. It's just the stage where we start.

The DVSA syllabus calls this "Control and Positioning" β€” Skills 5, 6 and 7 β€” and it sits at the foundation of everything else we build.

πŸ•ΉοΈ Controls and Instruments (Skill 5): Until the pedals, steering and
gears feel second nature, a learner can't fully observe or anticipate. Attention has to be somewhere β€” and we need it on the road.

🚦 Moving Away and Stopping (Skill 6): This is where routines MSM (Mirrors-Signal-Manoeuvre) and PSL (Position-Speed-Look) stop being memorised acronyms and become a real-time thinking framework.

πŸ“ Safe Positioning (Skill 7): I don't teach a rigid, fixed position. I teach learners to read the road and adapt β€” because every road is different, and the road won't wait for you to remember a rule.

When the car starts responding without conscious thought, and when your positioning flows naturally with the traffic, real driving begins.

We cover all of this across both Chilwell and Colwick test routes β€” and well beyond them.

If you're learning to drive in Nottingham and want to build a genuine foundation, not just test technique, feel free to message me.

Most learners drive into the bay fine. It's the approach and final position that cost them the mark.

Forward bay parking β€” what the examiner actually watches.
βœ… Observations β€” all-round, before and throughout
βœ… Control β€” speed and steering
βœ… Accuracy β€” car within the bay markings

πŸš— Did you know β€” for bay parking on your UK driving test, there is no set method you have to follow.

You choose your own approach.

The examiner only marks two things:
βœ… All-round observations throughout
βœ… Car safely parked within the bay lines

So whether you reverse in straight or use a 45-degree angle approach β€” either is completely acceptable, as long as your observations are thorough and you finish inside the white lines.

The 45-degree approach is something many learners don't know about β€” and once you try it, you'll find it often makes the whole manoeuvre smoother and easier to control.

β˜€οΈ Hot Weather is Coming to Nottingham – Stay Safe on the Road!

Sunshine is returning to Nottingham from Monday, with temperatures building towards a hot Wednesday β€” a good time to think about staying safe on the road in the heat.

Here are a few simple tips to help you stay safe:

πŸš— Check your tyre pressure
Always check your tyres when they're cold and keep them at the manufacturer's recommended pressure. Hot weather naturally increases tyre pressure.

😎 Watch out for sun glare
Bright sunshine can reduce visibility, especially at junctions and roundabouts. Keep your windscreen clean and wear sunglasses if needed.

🚫 Never leave children, vulnerable passengers or pets in a parked car
Even with the windows slightly open, the temperature inside a vehicle can rise dangerously within minutes.

πŸ’§ Stay hydrated
Long journeys and driving lessons in hot weather can leave you feeling tired more quickly. Drink plenty of water and take regular breaks if needed.

🌑️ Keep your vehicle cool
If possible, park in the shade and allow a little time for your car to cool down before setting off.

Stay safe out there, Nottingham. πŸ™Œ

πŸš— DVSA Update: Passing your driving test isn't the finish line.

The DVSA has recently updated its "Ready to Pass?" guidance, with a clear message:

Learning to drive isn't just about passing a testβ€”it's about becoming a safe, confident and independent driver for life.

One interesting point from the latest update is that the DVSA's own survey data found that learners who hadn't taken lessons before their theory test were 16% more likely to fail it first time β€” and 25% more likely to fail their practical test.

At H&E Driving School, this is exactly what we aim to achieve:

βœ… Learn why mistakes happen, not just how to avoid them.
βœ… Build confidence in real Nottingham trafficβ€”not just on driving test routes.
βœ… Develop the judgement and decision-making skills you'll use every time you drive.
βœ… Prepare for a lifetime of safe driving, not just a 40-minute practical test.

Passing your driving test is an important milestoneβ€”but it's only the beginning of your journey.

πŸ“– If you'd like to read the DVSA's latest update, you can find it here:

"Left lane is generally for the first exit."

The examiner said it. But did you know what it meant?

At Bostocks Lane approaching A52 Nottingham, worn road markings mean you're relying on those words more than you realise.

Show Me Tell Me Part 4/6 β€” Tyre Checks.
2 questions. 4 things to know.

β˜‘οΈT2 β€” TYRE PRESSURE
Where to find recommended pressure:
manufacturer's guide.
How to check: pressure gauge, tyres COLD, including spare tyre.
Refit valve caps after checking.

Why cold? Hot tyres expand β€” the reading won't be accurate.

β˜‘οΈT4 β€” TREAD DEPTH AND CONDITION
The number: 1.6mm minimum legal tread depth.
Check across the central three-quarters of the tyre, around the entire circumference.

πŸ””But also check:
CUTS β€” cracks or cuts in the surface.
BULGES β€” tyre wall pushing outward.
Either = unsafe. Tyre must be replaced.

Most learners know the 1.6mm number.
Fewer remember to mention cuts and bulges.
That's the part that makes your answer complete.
