☀️ Wheelchair-Friendly Summer Days Out in & Around Norwich! ♿👇
Looking for some accessible summer inspiration right on our doorstep? Whether you want a relaxed city day or a peaceful trip out into the Norfolk countryside, here are four wheelchair-friendly spots to check out this summer:
🏰 1. Norwich Castle
Following its massive multi-million-pound redevelopment, our iconic castle is now one of the most accessible historic sites in the UK! Thanks to state-of-the-art lifts, wheelchair users can explore five full floors, all the way from the atmospheric Norman basement right up to the stunning battlements for panoramic views of the city skyline. They also have a ground-floor Changing Places toilet.
🌳 2. Sweet Briar Marshes Nature Reserve
If you want to escape into nature without leaving the city, this beautiful Norfolk Wildlife Trust reserve in Hellesdon is a hidden gem. It features a perfectly flat, 2.5-metre-wide tarmac pathway (about 1.1km long) designed specifically for easy access. There are lightweight, easy-open gates suitable for wheelchairs and mobility scooters, and plenty of seating spaced out every 200 metres to sit back and listen to the birds.
🛶 3. Accessible Day Boats on the Norfolk Broads
You don’t have to stay on dry land to enjoy the sunshine! Just a short drive out to Wroxham or Stalham, you can hire fully wheelchair-accessible day boats (like those from Broads Tours or the Nancy Oldfield Trust). They feature ramps and hydraulic lifts so everyone can safely get on board!
🍕 4. Lunch at Yalm Food Hall (The Royal Arcade)
If you're heading into the city centre for a bit of shopping, skip trying to navigate cramped café doorways. Yalm in the Royal Arcade is incredibly spacious with completely step-free access, wide thoroughfares, lifts to the upper floor, and accessible toilets on both levels. You can order everything directly from your phone and choose from 8 different global food kitchens.
