Would you like us to make your life easier?

Often one of the manoeuvres that many owners/skippers find most daunting is that of berthing/docking/mooring in a relatively confined space.

As many boaters will testify, the bow often has a mind of its own and can often be difficult to ‘tame’.

Apart from practice one piece of equipment that can make life very much easier is a bow or stern thruster.

With a simple touch of a button the bow can be made to behave!

A relatively easy and neat retro-fit to existing sail or powerboats, a bow thruster is often very high on many ‘wish lists’.

Are your decks slippery?

As always, safety is paramount with boats and water when involving movement around the deck especially for those with reduced or compromised mobility issues.

When decking gets wet it can become positively scary!

There are several ways to ensure decks are ‘safe’, from epoxy sheathing/painting a non-slip surface right up to applying a dedicated surface such as Treadmaster.

A Nancy Oldfield Trust boat was recently in Cox’s Boatyard to have a section covered in the ubiquitous diamond pattern Treadmaster to assist in safe boarding.

Other sail and motor boats have been through the yard for non-slip paint surface, epoxy sheathing, recolour deck paint and simulated teak decking. Call the Cox’s team to discuss your deck ‘safety’ options.

Some dinghies are more complicated than others!

The Wanderer is a classic family cruiser/racer, sold in their hundreds and sailed on pretty much any stretch of water in the UK.

The Flying Dutchman on the other hand is one of the most complicated and challenging racing boat ever designed. This ex Olympic class dinghy made in Germany is definitely one for the experienced sailor who find them to offer truly exhilarating competition in the right conditions. The Flying Dutchman has almost everything fully adjustable hence the staggering amount of rope onboard.

Most dinghies these days are made of wood or glass fibre, with only a tiny few resorting to exotic build materials. Cox’s Boatyard has years of experience in both key substrates and look forward to your call if your dinghy is in need of TLC or major surgery!

Electrical systems on all Broads and coastal boats is about ensuring the system is safe and updated as required (to current BSS regs) and secondly about adding systems and ‘accessories’ to enhance enjoyment of the boat.

Modern life often revolves around USB sockets, charging systems for smart phone and connecting to the internet.

Unless your boat was built in the last 5 years or so, then the chances of having those systems originally onboard is highly unlikely.

Pick a colour . . . any colour.

Given a completely free rein, what colour would you like your boat?

Sure it depends on many aspects - what type of boat, where is it being used, size and style of boat for example. Don’t worry about ‘what the neighbours might think’, let’s call this a ‘research’ exercise.

Nowadays marine paint (single or two-pack) comes in literally hundreds of different colours and shades which can be applied to almost any surface/substrate.

At Cox’s Boatyard we have painted literally dozens of boats over the years, from a simple like-for-like colour to freshen up a faded or ‘tired’ paint surface, decorative ‘stripes’ and panels through to a complete colour change.

How about taking things to the next stage?

Something a little more contemporary perhaps.

Leaking, misty, scratched or broken windows on your pride and joy?

We refurbish or renew marine windows.

Planning and preparation are crucial if the new or ‘restored’ windows are to fit correctly and provide years of trouble free use.

The frames are carefully removed, all fixtures and fittings identified and marked to ensure the correct screw or bolt returns to their original position to ensure a 100% installation.

Any sealant is then carefully removed and cleaned to ensure a new watertight bond.

If new frames are required, the originals are utilised as a template to guarantee a perfect replacement fit.

The cabin window area is then thoroughly cleaned and prepared for the new/‘restored’ frame(s) to be installed, sealed, fixed and bedded in.

If you think a wash’n’go is a simple 10 minute job, read on.

A professional clean, wash and polish is pretty technical these days. Long gone is the bucket of warm soapy water and a nice big sponge.

We start with a high pressure hose using warm/hot water - harvested rainwater - to soften and remove the stubborn grime - you know, the green stuff - then environmentally friendly compounds and various brushes and heads on the polisher to get back to the gel coat or topcoat.

Then back to the key finish it’s time to wax and polish to get that beautiful shine that will be the envy of other boat owners on the Broads.
