Why is routine maintenance so important I do get asked this question a lot.
Here’s why
On this particular engine it’s clear that this has not been maintained very well over the years this carbon build up is the result of the oil breaking down possibly even the wrong oil used in its life. in turn when the oil degrades to this the engine has to work harder, meaning it will run hotter, the chances of the crankcase ventilation system becoming blocked is also high, This will then lead to oil leaks. Poor engine performance and all sorts of issues. Once the oil has got to this stage there is also a high chance of main end bearing failure,oil pump failure, noisy lifters and ultimately engine failure, like this particular engine this engine had worked itself so hot it actually fired a spark plug straight out of the head and has in fact melted the cylinder head.
Regular maintenance is absolutely necessary calling the customer and telling them your engine is dead is not fun, It’s a day ruiner don’t let this be you. If you’ve not long had your bongo make it your business to know its history if you don’t or can’t know the history start creating one it’s better to be safe then sorry.
This van will live to see another day after we remove and replace the engine. Just a little insight into why it’s important to maintain these pride and joys.
