🚐 Calling electric van owners, there's good news for your next MOT.

DVSA have recently updated testing classifications for zero-emission vans between 3.5 and 4.25 tonnes meaning from the 1st June they can now be tested as Class 7 vehicles.

This means many electric van owners no longer need to use an HGV testing station for their MOT. Instead, your vehicle can be tested at approved Class 7 MOT centres like Carcraft Northwich MOT, with the current maximum MOT fee being just £58.60.

If you're a tradesperson, courier, delivery driver or business owner running an electric van, this could make your MOT more convenient and more affordable.

Vans that fall into this category will no longer need an MOT until 3 years from the date of its first registration rather than the 1 year under the old HGV classification.

Hi everyone, I'm Adam. Your local MOT tester based at Carcraft Northwich MOT.

I carry out Class 4 and Class 7 MOT testing, and one thing I always try to be is fair and honest in my MOT's.

Unlike testers working for the chain garages, I’m not paid commission and my MOT's don't affect sales targets or quotas. My job is simply to test vehicles properly and safely in line with the DVSA MOT testing manual. Nothing more, nothing less.

I’m also proud to be a DVSA green rated tester, which reflects a consistent testing standard.

Whether your vehicle passes first time or needs some work, I’ll always explain things clearly and honestly without the pressure or upselling that many people worry about when booking an MOT.

If you’re looking for a local independent tester you can trust, feel free to get in touch 👍

We had this delightful little Austin A35 in with us a few weeks ago after its new owner had just bought it and had it recovered straight to us to get it running properly.

The engine wanted to run, but it would splutter, stall and refuse to stay going consistently.

After getting to work on the very rudimentary electrics, we found a number of poorly crimped and loose connections including the main negative lead. We also discovered the condenser positive wire was intermittently earthing against the distributor body.

Once we’d tidied up the wiring, eliminated the poor connections and fitted a new condenser, we finally had this British classic firing up and running as she should again.

It’s always a pleasure working on classics like this and helping keep them on the road.

We had a vehicle come in this week with the oil light flickering intermittently. What we found was a good reminder of why regular servicing matters. It's not only wet belt engines that can suffer from this issue.

We removed the oil sump on this diesel Mazda 6 looking for a clue, and we certainly found what we were looking for. We cleaned out the oil pickup as it had become restricted with carbon deposits.

When oil flow is affected, it can quickly lead to major engine issues due to oil starvation in parts of the engine. This one was caught at just the right time.

Keeping up with oil changes using the correct specification helps prevent this from happening but there can also be other causes.

Today we repaired this electronic steering column on a Kia Sorento. The bushing between the assisting motor and the column had broken up and was causing play and a clunk in the column. We removed the steering column from the vehicle for access to the motor housing and refitted once the new bush was fitted.

Do you have a Kia or Hyundai with a strange noise coming from the steering? Let us help.

Today we had a Suzuki Splash in for its MOT. During the inspection we discovered the rear nearside brake was binding excessively, which essentially means the brake was partially stuck on and causing constant drag on the wheel.

With the customer’s authorisation, we carried out a rear brake service. We explained beforehand that with drum brakes it’s difficult to know the exact issue until the drums are removed. Common causes include seized pivots on the brake shoes or a faulty adjuster mechanism.

In this case, we found that one piston in the wheel cylinder had seized, preventing the front brake shoe from releasing properly or applying pressure evenly when required. We contacted the customer again to explain the fault and obtain approval for the repair. We also advised that the brake pipe to the cylinder might need replacing if it had seized in place.

Fortunately, with a bit of careful persuasion the brake pipe came free without damage. After replacing the faulty cylinder and rebuilding the brakes, everything was reassembled and tested — leaving the vehicle with a properly functioning set of rear brakes once again.

It’s important to have sticking or binding brakes checked as soon as possible. Excess heat can damage wheel bearings, reduce fuel economy, and lead to premature wear of discs and pads.

If you think your vehicle may have a brake issue, give us a call on 01606 45062 or visit www.carcraftnorthwichmot.co.uk to see how we can help.
