I talked to a guy on the phone the other day who said something that stuck: "I'm glad you're making Kits, but I don't know how you are. No one's building anything these days."
Truth is, there's a quiet minority of really cool folks who choose to make a difference by building stuff. Doesn’t matter if you build custom cars, teardrop trailers, boats, or birdhouses: if you choose to take on a project that pushes you, you’re rebelling against a new and frightening norm of sitting back and watching.
While most of the world scrolls, builders provide the entertainment.
Social media might have a lot of negative sides to it, but it isn’t all bad if we use it for ideas and inspiration that we actually act on, you know, in real life. I’m glad to be a part of a community that chooses a life of action, thrilled for the folks who receive praise for their creations, in real life and online.
Take this picture of Toby Stowe’s Smyth Beetle Ute, for example. A cool custom car, the beautiful English countryside, and a pup. A great scene completed by a hand-built machine that makes you stop and ask “What is that? A Beetle… truck? It has a stepside?” and so on.
The DIY community might’ve changed a little bit, but it’s not going anywhere.
