PF Motor Services

PF Motor Services Hi I am an independent vehicle repairer operating in South Devon. Since 2004 I have been an independent repairer.

For most of my working life I was a mobile and static plant fitter with a local clay company and worked and repaired anything from company cars, Land Rovers to large dump trucks excavators and lorries. The purpose of this website is to allow the motoring public access to my many years of experience in the motor trade and to offer FREE practical advise with this "online service" to run along side

my business in South Devon. I will do my best to answer any vehicle related problem that you may have though I cannot promise an immediate answer to every single question I still maybe able to point you in the right direction. With over forty years experience in repair and maintenance along with other related practical mechanical engineering experience with an interest to research with a "get to the bottom of it attitude" of every day problems I hope to be able to help you.

As many of my customers will know I have decided to call it a day with most of my vehicle work. At 65 I have reached a time of my life where crawling around under cars, heavy lifting etc has become increasingly difficult. I will, however, always be available for minor jobs, diagnostics, advice, fault/problem " work through's" questions and answers, via FB message service for any one who needs to find a solution to any problem they may have. This will be a free service for all of my family friends
and customers. A big thank you all for your custom and patience over the years. 👍

Your next vehicle purchase Diesel, Petrol, Hybrid?

As a repairer and massive Japanese, Toyota /Honda advocate I am always surprised when I discover engineering or design weaknesses but there are a few I have come across over the years. It pays to do your homework so you know what to look for but to be fair it will be a very short list compared to the likes of VW/Audi/Seat. Peugeot/ Renault etc. Diesels in general have become so complex and troublesome in an attempt to conquer the emissions problem. The simple compression ignition engine that used to have so many advantages has become a modern day and expensive motoring nightmare for many and would agree that fuel efficient petrol engines are the way forward until, that is Hybrid and other "clean" power trains inevitably become the norm.

Winter tips!
Do yourself a favour - Check your car over before winter sets in. Or at least ask a professional!
With shorter days and winter weather fast approaching, it's a good idea to get your car checked out before "it" catches you out.

Management lights, tyre condition / pressures coolant/anti freeze strength, battery condition/ charge rate screen wash and additive are just a few of the checks that will prevent you from being caught out this winter
TYRES BRAKES SUSPENSION AND STEERING.
Tyres - your life line between you, your loved ones and the road travelling under you at 70 mph or more. Ignore their condition at your peril. Check regularly for tread depth, signs of uneven wear, damage and monitor pressures regularly. Incorrect tyre pressures are not only dangerous but also has an effect on MPG.
Brakes - so easily taken for granted when they start to lose efficiency for any particular reason. This can sometimes be a gradual and barely noticeable process. Make sure important wearing parts and fluid levels are checked and monitored on a regular basis.

Suspension and steering. Wear in suspension and steering systems can have a serious affect on your safety. The current UK MOT test will check the condition once every twelve months but if you are a high mileage user and/ or use the vehicle over rough terrain its important to have all of the associated items checked on a regular basis.

The MOT rules have changed. The most notable changes are aimed at Diesel vehicles fitted with a DPF. but many of the new rules will affect diesel and petrol cars.though much will depend on the age of your car.
Here is a list of changes that have already come into effect from last Monday the 21st May 2018.
If you have any concerns regarding your vehicle - warning lights etc ( EML is now a fail) I would advise to contact me so as I can clear up any grey areas and as always advise to keep on top of any problem before it develops.

A general list of new checks is:

- Reversing lights on vehicles first used from September 2009

- Daytime running lights on vehicles first used from March 2018

- Front fog lights on vehicles first used from March 2018

- Prop shafts

- Bumper security and condition

- Rear drive shafts on all vehicles

- Cab security (commercial)

- Cab steps (commercial)

- Floor condition

- Undertray security

- Noise suppression material

- Emission control equipment

- Engine malfunction indicator lamp

- Fluid leaks posing an environmental risk

-Some vehicles may be fitted with High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps. It is not permitted to
convert existing halogen headlamp units for use with HID bulbs.

Euro 6 vehicles must be fitted with diesel particulate filters but they may also be fitted on Euro 5 and Euro 4 vehicles if the manufacturer considered it necessary to meet emissions standards

SAFE MOTORING!
