THE 1.5 METRE RULE: WHY IT MATTERS ๐ฒ
When you pass a cyclist, you are not just overtaking a bike.
You are overtaking a human being with no protective shell, no airbags, no crumple zones, and no margin for your misjudgement.
The Highway Code is clear.
At speeds up to 30mph, you must leave at least 1.5 metres when overtaking a cyclist.
More if the road is narrow, potholes are present, or your speed is higher.
Why so much space?
Because cyclists move.
Wind pushes them.
Potholes force them out.
Passing too close can make them wobble, panic, or collide with the kerb.
A close pass that feels โfineโ from a driverโs seat can feel terrifying and life-threatening on two wheels.
A safe driver plans the overtake.
Slows down.
Waits for a clear view.
Gives the space they would want if it were their own child, partner, or friend on that bike.
Close passing is not just inconsiderate.
It is dangerous.
It is illegal and it is completely avoidable.
Safe driving is not a skill you learn once.
It is a habit you maintain forever.
