Roundabouts: The Lane Rule Every Learner Should Knows
Small roundabouts cause more confusion than full-sized ones, mainly because everything happens so quickly. Here are the key points to remember before your next lesson or test.

✅ If a roundabout has no right turn and no 3rd exit, the 2nd exit becomes your "straight ahead" option. That means you take the right-hand lane, not the left.

✅ Decide your lane choice before you reach the roundabout. Once you are on it, there is very little time to correct your position.

✅ Always read the road signs and markings first. They tell you exactly which lane to use, well before you get close.

✅ Doing well on a large roundabout does not automatically mean you will get a small roundabout right. The rules are the same, but the smaller size and faster pace make mistakes more likely.

Small habits like these make a big difference to test-day confidence.

Roundabout confidence comes from three habits, not luck.

Here is what every learner should take from this lesson:

Slow down early. Reading road signs in good time gives you space to plan your move, not react at the last second.

Know your exit before you arrive. If you are taking the 4th exit (like Team Valley), you usually want the left lane approaching the roundabout for a straight-through or left-curving exit. The right lane is for hard rights or a full loop.

Watch for bus lanes. They are easy to miss under pressure, and driving in one when you should not can cost you marks on your test.

Count exits as you pass them, not before. Counting each exit as you cross it keeps you accurate, even if the roundabout has confusing signage.

These are simple habits, but they are exactly what examiners are watching for. Get them right in lessons, and they become automatic on test day.

Independent driving is a set part of the UK driving test, and it is also one of the areas learners feel least confident about before they try it for the first time. Building this skill early, in a calm and structured way, makes a real difference on test day.

Spiral roundabout in the driving test? Read the sign and follow the markings. 🚗

Before entering, read the direction sign carefully. For example, if your exit is Exit A1(N= north), choose the lane shown on the sign for Exit A1(N).

Once on the roundabout, look for A1(N) on the road markings and follow it. Remember, your lane may spiral or split as you go around; that’s normal.

Keep a safe, controlled speed so you have time to read the markings and observe other traffic and the traffic lights.

Check your mirrors before changing position or moving between lanes, and signal clearly when required, particularly when leaving the roundabout.

In the test, the key is simple:

Read the sign → Choose the correct lane → Follow the road markings → Check your mirrors → Signal when required → Safe exit.

Don’t guess the lane — let the signs and road markings guide you. ✅

Left turn. Slight drift. Fault or fine? 🚗

The learner is taking a left turn, and if you watch closely, you'll notice something happens with the car's positioning as it comes round.

This is exactly the kind of small detail that catches learners out on test day. It is easy to miss when you are focused on steering, checking mirrors, and thinking about the next junction all at once, which is why practice with an experienced instructor makes such a difference.
